The City Archives - Basingstoke Town, 1999[/u]
We have a new feature to place alongside our previews this season, as one of Saints Chat's regular posters, Brummie, delves into the history books to provide us with match reports from the past. This gives a chance to walk down memory lane, or learn a little about City's past, before the next match in the present!
This time, Brummie has given us a typed report of an away match against Basingstoke in 1999. Wayne Andrews scored two goals in injury time for a 2-0 win!
Thanks, as always, go to Brummie for delving into the City Archives to provide us with an interesting read alongside our usual match previews!

The Harpenden Construction Limited March player of the month is Sakho Bakare and his award will be presented by long-standing Saints supporter Richard Stanwell MBE, prior to the this weekend’s game.
Voting for the player of the season, goal of the season and Wagstaffe Simmons award (for the person who supporters feel has done most for the club over the season either on or off the field) will also take place at Saturday’s match.

I would like to quickly mention directed towards the weymouth manager over his response after there equalise to the camera. I feel its was a disgrace and no need for his reaction. I know ian ridley himself attempted to stop this but was ignored. Hopefully someone else pick up or heard this and that the weymouth manager is put to shame either by the reports that follow or the nlp.

Thought we were coasting today with 15-10 mins to go. Can't believe we gave away those two goals. I can understand the substitutions in some ways (with a win looking almost certain and Chesham on Monday), but the team was much weaker and lost its pattern after Martin and Shields came off. Oh well, here's to promotion next season!

Game over now. And it was our own fault today. The defence looked shaky all afternoon and finally Weymouth made us pay. Against a better side we'd have conceded three or four.
With no Micah Hyde we had no control over the game whatsoever, we looked a completely different team.
Agree with barker that I can understand the substitutions, they just didn't work out at all and that's ultimately what lost us the game.
And then when you look at the fact that Cambridge, Stourbridge and Leamington all dropped points this weekend it makes it all the more frustrating.
Missed opportunity.

Shame. Why was shields taken off.? Towards the end of the game he would have had a great chance to. Supply more chances for the side.

I felt that James Comley had better games at right back than in his natural centre midfield position today, not that i'm blaming him for todays defeat (Sorry feels almost like one), really missed Micah today.
I don't think that you can blame the result on the two substitutions, should of had more than enough to beat a team like the Muff @ Home leading 2-0 with 8 minutes to play with the squad we've got !

i think you can blame 1 of the substitutions. the fella who came on totally disrupts the team. no pace and never holds the ball up. not the first time this has happened

We may not have been playing that great today but we were still coasting at 2-0 up after 70 mins. Why on earth would you make substitutions in that situation, unless players were injured? Both Martin and Shields were having decent enough games. The same cannot be said of either of the replacements and the disruption caused. Total madness and 2 points chucked down the drain. Sorry but there is only one reason we didn't come away the win today.

Every manager makes substitutions in every match, occasionally for tactical reasons but generally to replace a player who is tiring. Henry for Shields was basically a like for like swap (guess D.H. Thought Sean was tiring).Furlong for Martin is different. Simon is good at running the channels, something that Furlong at his age can't do anymore, but he should have held the ball up,something that he patently failed to do yesterday. The other alternative was to bring on a midfielder (McGonigle possibly) for one of the front two and put someone on the big fella on their wide left who was seeing too much of the ball. This management games is easy from the sidelines, and even easier after the event ,let's hope some lessons can be learned from this 'defeat'.

I still don't believe you should give up a 2 goal lead @ home with 9 minutes to play to a side that has drawn 1 and lost 4 of their previous 5 games looking at a 4th straight relegation battle (possibly 3rd relegation in 4 seasons) when you are the form team regardless of what substitution is made !

2 up and should have been further ahead. But have we lost any other 2 goal leads this season? A few I believe. And I cant see the logic in bringing on Paul Furlong other than- on you go mate, we are cruising, have a run out!. And I said as much at the time.I am no fan of our manager and yes it is easy to manage from the terraces but does anyone genuinely beleive we are going to progress when we have a begging letter from the club and a manager who may be out of his league? However, I have to rate the season a success as we have not but another season in the southern pub league to endure and maybe many more unless things change. Crowds 25% up as well apparently. Does that mean we have more money coming in than last year? If it does has this been reflected in our budget? A very poor league overall(look how we beat Cambridge and how they beat us) and whoever goes up will need to improve greatly to impress. So off to Chesham as it is still possible for us to sneak into the playoffs. Looking forward to the fans forum.
