After the disappointment of last Saturday let's get our season back on track.
Bath went down to East Thurrock 7-1 in their FA Cup 4th Qualifying match.
Bath City @ Home LDLLW F 4 A 10 Saints on road WWLLWLW F 11 A 9
Although their home league record is poor and they got stuffed in the cup their overall league form had improved drastically recently with 3 wins a draw and a defeat (in their last 5) scoring 8 times and conceding 4. They actually had a record of 7 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat (in all competitions) before losing narrowly 1-0 at Bromley before their cup game.

Fairly even but a very scrappy game not helped by over officious officials. We need to start upping the ante and may get something out of it.

This on paper is our strongest team, and Bath are one of the weaker sides, so unless we think Pires can make a difference, and he certainly hasn't set Biggleswade on fire, then we need to make some changes. Perhaps we will beat Whitehawk and everything will seem alright again, but I have always thought this squad would struggle a bit and I worry that a long hard haul lies ahead without the financial support of a good cup run.

On first thought that was probably our worst performance of the season. A scrappy first half that was fairly even, they got a fair amount of joy with balls played behind Kyriacou in the early stages we huffed and puffed but created nothing of note. Second half they scored within minutes of the restart, a lobbed cross to the far post and poor defending by Chappell who was out jumped by the wide midfielder who was probably shorter than him. After that we just melted away with very few attacks, Frendo had one good opportunity following a cross from the left but totally miss hit his volley into the ground and it ballooned over. Rather mysterious how they failed to put us out of our misery as cross after cross flew past our goal and shots wizzed narrowly wide. Their top scorer applied the coup de grace in the final minutes, Fortunately for us he was only on the pitch for five mins or this might have been a larger defeat. Only Walshe and Gorman came out of this with any credit, everyone else was way below par. Fair play to Bath, they aren't anything special, and coming off a seven goal thrashing from a lower league team last week this was a commendable effort and a fully deserved win. Two nil was a flattering scoreline for us. Not disheartened, as moving up a division I fully expected days like these and I don't feel the need for radical changes. One disappointment was our subs bench, with no sign of either Pires or Mitchell, although I did hear an unsubstantiated rumour that the latter was injured. Maybe one of those coming on in the second half might have made a difference, but I'm probably clutching at straws.

Maybe one of those coming on in the second half might have made a difference, but I'm probably clutching at straws. A very fair assessment, lonecrank. A fairly even 1st half but the 2nd half was, without doubt, the worst showing of the season. An abject performance, which made even the Chelmsford, Sutton and Ebbsfleet games look good. We were a yard slower to the ball all over the park and only Joe Welch and Ben Martin really came out of this game with any degree of respectability. Bath were not a good side, not even an average side, as proved by their 7-1 Thurrock drubbing at East Thurrock. We were dreadful and today could easily have been 5-0. A bad day and long round trip to boot. There is a lot of work to do. Very, very disappointing.

Nigh on 270 mile round trip to watch an inept incompetent impotent performance with no player excused. Couldn't hit a cows bottom with a banjo up front and as for defence and non existent midfield!!!! The opposition leaked 7 goals last week against much lower league oppo. We never threatened. A truly shocking effort to follow up a truly shocking effort last week. We have good players but a really inconsistent team lacking in a plan A never mind plan B. And we are so slow when on the ball. Lacking movement , anticipation and a willingness to get into the box. John was way off today and had two chances that went begging. Bath aint a good side regardless of recent form. They were just much better than us. Absolute pants. Back to basics at training please. Practice shooting, passing dead balls etc. Its that basic.

Talking of form that's 2 wins and 4 defeats in our last 6 now and 1 of those wins was against Weston.
Us and Whitehawk are the only sides outside the bottom 4 to have lost 7 games or more already this season.
We need a good November with 4 of the next 5 at Home with a 2-1-3 record at Home.

Certainly a disappointing result and, by the sound of it, a poor performance but we are still the 'best' of the promoted teams so far. Hemel are picking up a bit and Wealdstone are slowly hauling themselves away from the bottom of the table but if, before the start of the season, we'd said we'd be mid-table at the start of November, we'd have taken that, wouldn't we?
As the season goes on, the league table gives a more accurate reflection of where everyone stands and the fact is that of our 19 points, 15 have come against the bottom seven. The other four have come against 4th placed Bromley (2-2 at home) and 6th placed Maidenhead (4-1 at home). So that tells us something.
I agree with Hatboy, the next few weeks are important with four out of five at home, plus (hopefully) a couple of Trophy games.
But all the while we're in mid-table, the management will be learning what it takes to compete closer to the top of this division. Of course, if we get sucked into a scrap at the bottom it'll be a different tale but nothing I've seen so far suggests that is a serious danger.
