Gray expects City to ‘put it right’ in Stones FA Trophy replay Michael Edwards
St Albans City joint manager James Gray expects his side to put right the wrongs of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Wealdstone in tonight’s FA Trophy replay.
Dagenham and Redbridge loanee Nathan Green put the Saints in front put a late lapse in concentration allowed Scott McGleish to head home a free-kick and earn the Stones a third qualifying round replay.
Speaking the Saintsnet after the game, Gray bemoaned his side’s lack of ruthlessness in front of goal, their run of poor luck and the fact they didn’t “take the game to Wealdstone” as much as he’d like.
He expects tonight’s tie to be different.
“We we’re well on top in the second half, forcing the issue and creating chances but we didn’t tale full advantage of it. We were sloppy in final third. If we’ve have been a bit cuter then could have opened them up more often than we did,” he said.
“I would have liked to see us take the game to them a bit more with [Lee Chappell] or [Nathan Green] down the left but the final ball was lacking, not just from them. We could do with a bit of luck in front of goal, too. John Frendo needs a goal to get his confidence back but I’m sure we’ll put it right on Tuesday.”
City beat Gordon Bartlett’s Stones at Grosvenor Vale 3-0 earlier in the season thanks to a Frendo brace either side of a Lee Clarke strike.
“We’ve got to down there and get the win. We’ll be refreshed and we’ll try to finish the job but it’s not going to be easy because Wealdstone are in good form. It’s going to be a tough night but one we’re looking forward to,” said Gray.

Disappointing? Not a description I would use, euclid. Embarrassing and gutless would be a far more fitting way to describe our inept performance tonight and these type of performances are starting to occur far too often. Make no mistake, this was comfortably our worst showing of the season. We are just showing no consistency. We were trounced tonight and could easily have gone down by 5 or 6 against a Wealdstone side, who were average, at best. Only James Comley and Nathan Green can really hold their heads up after tonight. Not good.

First of all, the positives:
1. The first five minutes were okay 2. It was only £12 3. It was "only" the Trophy 4. The burger and chips from the Rollin' Kitchen were (by the usual standards of football ground food) excellent. That's a neat little initiative from Wealdstone – they have invested in that mobile kitchen and on non match days it goes to various places – markets, food fairs, events – and makes a bit of extra cash. 5. The chant "£12, you're having a laugh," was returned with "12 fans, you're having a laugh," both of which were quite amusing.
I will keep the negatives brief, because there's little constructive I can offer.
Wealdstone are still not a great side but they have come on a lot since we rolled them over easily in the league. They fight for each other, cover for each other's deficiencies and work as a team. Pretty much everything we failed to do tonight and that, really, was the cause of all our problems.
At 2-0 down we made our best chance of the game, which Elliott Bailey fired over from close-range. It's easy to criticise him for missing an 'open goal' from four yards but I prefer to focus on the fact he was actually there, at the far post, in a position to miss it. Too often the ball flashes across the goal and there's no one there. Had that gone in, it might have turned out different.
The sending off was a joke. Wales slid in for a ball he had every right to contest. As far as I could tell, he didn't make any contact with their player but their player held his head (not, I don't think, to get Wales sent off but to get the referee to halt the game and end any danger to their goal). EDIT: I must have looked away and missed Wales lashing out, as others have explained below. I was completely mystified but clearly I wasn't watching properly!
The third goal was the result of terrible defending. No one seemed to know where any of the Wealdstone players were. Or care where they were, which was worse.
Fair play to Wealdstone, they fought for that victory and they got it. They're still not a good side but six or eight weeks ago they were in danger of being dead and buried, but they have pulled together and improved as a team. We seem to be going in the opposite direction. Perhaps my view is skewed by the fact I didn't see either of the excellent wins over Basingstoke or Havant.
I don't really believe in karma but as a club, I believe St Albans helped create that result tonight. Wealdstone have a certain siege mentality, probably as a result of everything they've been through over the past 25 years, and they have a strength and unity that many clubs would envy. They've even adopted Millwall's No One Likes Us chant.
We played right into their hands. The ticket price and taking the mickey with the attendance (which Wealdstone put in quote marks in the centre of their programme '457' to make their point) may seem like peripheral things that shouldn't and don't affect what happens on the pitch but I take a contrary view. Everything contributes. The club you are creates the team you are.
I think St Albans' hierarchy need to decide what sort of club they want to be and want to be seen to be. At the moment, we're looking a bit like the Tottenham of the Conference South. Ideas above our station, expensive, great on our day (which are few and far between), a bit too much misplaced swagger and too easy to roll over when the going gets a bit tough.
Perhaps that's an over-reaction to a terrible journey and poor performance but I didn't see a lot of unity or collective fight tonight. Time to roll the sleeves up, perhaps.

I'll give my thoughts on the game in a minute but just to let you know Recent Convert, RE the sending off, Wales and their player both went in for the challenge which was 50/50 and a second or two later Wales looked up to see if the Ref was looking (didn't look very well) and kicked their player in the face. Clear red card.

Oh, thanks. I completely missed that. Must've looked away for a split second. I had no idea Wales had lashed out and was completely mystified.
Anyway, to put my grumpiness into perspective, since the 3-0 win over Wealdstone on September 20 I have seen the following games:
Bishops Stortford A (Herts Senior Cup - yes I know, I happened to have a meeting nearby that afternoon!) L 0-2 Chelmsford H L 0-2 Boreham Wood A L 1-2 Brackley Town H W 2-0 Concord H L 0-1 Whitehawk H L 2-3 Farnborough H L 2-3 Wealdstone H D 1-1 Wealdstone A L 0-3

Very frustrating evening down in Ruislip. -We're stuck between a mix of over elaborating it and playing long ball. -We've become extremely soft and no one wants to battle to get the ball back. Defensively were all over the place and this has been number 1 problem all season. -Were missing tap ins.
-Comley is a god. His ability is a cut above the rest and his attitude is superb.
Wealdstone were good tonight credit to them. I notice they got a pretty low home attendance though. What's that all about? Did their 600 traveling fans not want to see the outcome ?

Clear red card. My take on it, exactly. The 2nd totally unnecessary red card in just over 2 weeks, notwithstanding all the pointless yellows we have picked up in recent weeks for back chatting officials. Why would certain players (and we all know who they are) think they can change an official's mind on a decision that has not gone their way by mouthing off at the official, sometimes for as much as 5 minutes. It is never going to happen. And they wonder why they are then given a yellow? This indiscipline needs to stop or it is going to cost us dearly.

That was purely a joke, by the way... I'm not suggesting Wales' missus has booked a trip to the Christmas market in Berlin for a couple of Satudays' time!

The sending off was as clear as day clearly kicked the wealdstone player in the head, although the wealdstone player wasn't entirely blameless with some antics on the floor, it didn't warrant that reaction. However that player was lucky to not be sent off right at the start of the second half, as he elbowed Wales right in the face by the touchline in front of the referee and linesman who both somehow missed it. I think between the two situations frustration boiled over as a result. I'll comment on the rest of the game in a bit. I'm willing to hedge a bet that this could be steve Wales first professional red card.

Forgot to mention all you have to do with any set piece against us is send it to the back post, because you can get there will be nobody marking you there. It's the reason we even had a replay.
Never should have had to play this game tonight.

Following last season's cup exploits, failing to reach the First Round Proper in either the FA Cup or FA Trophy is very disappointing. Obviously you can't expect to reach the First Round Proper of both competitions every season, but it just feels like we've failed to step it up in matches which were relatively winnable. It's not like Concord or Wealdstone are world beaters, or are Conference National standard.
Onto the next one.

What a depressing night. I fail to see why we take a forward on loan from a Division Two club and put him on the bench and start with someone we have hauled back from London Colney. I actually have no criticism of Bailey,he ran his heart out - full stop Wales hang your head in shame. I forgive Chappell his red card against Farnborough as it was born out of frustration, an opponent dribbling away with the ball when we had a free kick in the last minute. Unlikely that the result would have been any different tonight but there was still hope. Fair play to Wealdstone they have improved since our last visit and three nil was a fair scoreline. Agree with the foot soldier about Comley, tried very hard but was let down by his team mates. Can't agree with recentconvert about the chips though - cooked at too high a temperature and left in the pan too long ! A few more performances like this and we will be tasting the chips from Frome Town again.

Not much to add to the above. The Rollin' Kitchen curry & rice was enjoyable - can't recall ever having a curry at football; certainly not non-league. Coms put in a lot of hard work though again was reluctant to shoot; Bailey worked hard but put the ball over the bar from 4 yards. Ben Martin's continued presence in the team is becoming embarrassing; i felt he had another shocker. We were comprehensively beaten by a workmanlike team who make the most of what they have. I fear we will be relying on Staines & Weston to maintain their poor form to keep us in this league. Several players who started off well are now looking as if they are not good enough for Conference South. If as it seems the owners are unwilling to increase or even maintain the budget a major overhaul of the squad will be necessary. Lets hope Bath at home is better than the performance at Twerton Park - that was arguably even worse than tonight!

Firstly, just like to congratulate wealdstone on a spirited performance as woeful as we were, there team togetherness and desire to win was to be respected. Benny has gone from Mr dependable of last season, to a player who's form goes up and down like a yoyo. He has it in him to be more, this is the same centre back who got welling utd to the conference! Where is that player! We need him badly! Frendo run of form was summed up with that shot in the first half, from outside the box that went out for a throw on. Frendo needs a striker that can do all the leg work for him, so he can start getting into the box again and scoring goals. He puts such a shift on the pitch atm, that he's always outside the box when he should be in the box scoring. Comely was absolutely superb and when we got went down to 10 he was even better. Comely on the right is a massive no no. This man needs a fans song! If only we could get comely to shoot instead of trying to walk it into the net. The disappointing thing was when yearwood and king came on, they were busy and tried to play football and showed a real determination that we had been lacking all game and they're meant to be our kids/future players.
If you think that's bad I haven't seen us win since staines!!

The crowd tonight was announced as 324. The Wealdstone website was happy to announce that they had 260 fans down the Park on Saturday. Once you have deducted the City fans from tonight's gate (30/40), it appears that Wealdstone only get 25 to 35 more fans for a home game then travel to an away game. Something doesn't stack up!!

At the start of the season I posted that mid table mediocrity would be fantastic and still believe that! No toying with relegation would be such a great season. Still believe that. Also thought that we would get the occasional gubbing but that equally we would give a few out. All this was in the belief that although we may have the occasional off game, that the team spirit was such that the players would give their all and leave nothing on the field at the end of the game Prior to last night I had sadly witnessed several games where some players had not, how can I put it, seemed fully committed to the cause. Last night I witnessed a performance from our team that left me stunned saddened bewildered and not a little upset. Not one player came out of last nights game with any credit. This was a pub team performance, with due respect to pub teams. Passing, control, touch, movement, effort all missing. I lost count of how many times we gave and I do mean gave the ball away. We were slow on the ball and when it was controlled there were sadly too many touches. The scoreline does not flatter Wealdstone and well done to them. They played at pace as a unit and deserved the win. There are several high profile players in our team who need to have a good look at themselves. If it was a lack of skill we were talking about fair enough . You are only as good as you are. However, the dip in form and performances of many players needs to be evaluated. I was at that same ground only 6/7 weeks ago and we played them off the park and they looked poor. Someone, in fact several people said to me last night , that they had brought several players in and changed the team around. Just like us then!!!!! Very disappointing and needs to be remedied fast. Bath killed us a few weeks ago. I hope that my stated belief that any team can beat any other on the day holds true for Saturday. our win at Basingstoke has proven this. I do wonder at times what training takes place as many many basics were sadly missing last night. COYS you are surely better than you displayed last night? aren't you? If you are, start showing us. game after game please. Or go.
