In the last week, I have started to design a mobile app - The Mighty Saints. This was for my own personal use so that I could stay up to date with Saints news/scores even when I am on the move. I'm looking to add more and more features over time but did wonder if its of interest to anyone else? Mark (webbo) has already assisted me - so that I can link to the Saints stats database and have also connected to other sources where necessary. I'd be very happy if anyone wants to try it out (it's still probably a bit rough around the edges at the moment and I want to improve the design etc) and share with me any feedback or ideas they might have. I'm not a full time developer (just a hobbyist) so will be working on this sporadically - you can give it a try at: www.sacfc.co.uk/MightySaints/

Hi mjhill1967 - I've just downloaded onto my iPhone. Thanks. Will certainly use it.

I quite like the prototype app. Will the vidiprinter be running on all match days?

The Vidiprinter gets data from the football Web pages website and only provides basic updates (goals, half time score, attendance etc). However, news is probably better on match days as it pulls in twitter updates - which is much more active than it was at the start of the season. I'm actually thinking of extending the Vidiprinter to show all Conference South updates - what do you think? I'm going to add a League table view this week and possibly a video viewing option as well.

Tweets on match days may cool off again for a few weeks as I'm heading back up north missing a few games at least, however, like you say, the twitter link would probably be best. A vidiprinter for all scores could definitely work.

That sounds excellent. I think other Conference South results would be great. How will I get my app updated to include the new facilities when they're added?

Each time you load the app, it checks for updates and will load the latest update automatically. Saint - I understood there were a few people with access to the Twitter account now? I could tweet myself but although I get to nearly all home games, I am more erratic in making it along to away games (although have made it along to more than I expected to attend when the season started...!)
PS You don't need to use a phone to access it - you can also just load it into any browser or on a tablet device

Hopefully they'll be more updates after I've gone back though, especially as our followers have gone up massively over the past month again. There's actually more to doing updates than you'd expect, as it all has to be very 'official'. Slagging off referees and the like is not welcomed on there, sadly.

Thanks - that's brilliant. I bet there's not many people who live in Wales who have the app! ?

Well I think we can certainly say you are the first person in Wales to use it - and may possibly be the only person in Wales to use it for quite a while...

Mjhill love it and like your suggestions about Twitter updates on the vidiprint. Am I right to presume you are currently working on features? Rather than design atm? Trying to think of something for you. Perhaps and up to date first team squad and bio. Like other football clubs and section for jimmy interviews.

Thanks asaintreborn! First team squad a good idea and am thinking of a video/audio option as well. I've just posted a breakfast update... you can now select on the Vidiprinter whether to view Saints only Vidiprinter updates or for all of the league

My updates at the weekend Matt were exactly that I said 'Goal: Saints 1-0. 13th minute. Frendo plays in Malcolm, who slots it under Vickers and in' Or something to that effect. When the tweets are just 'Goal, 1-0 Saints, Malcolm' I am not doing the tweets that day!

i understand, i don't get why the people who are doing the tweets when youre not around can't be a little bit more descriptive! doesn't take much lol, like i said the herts ad ones are usually spot on when they are about

I agree, the Herts Ad tweets are good, he just needs to go to more away games!

The problem for me with Herts Ad tweets - from a programming perspective - is that they are not categorised (hash tagged) in any way. Therefore updates could be for Rugby matches, Colney Heath FC - which I really don't want in my app. Now if they could start using hash tags then that would be useful....

The club uses the hashtag #sacfc... I'm sure Mike would be willing to use that. He often looks at this forum, so you may well get a reply!

I can do that. Just for match days or for every tweet about the club?

Hi Mike. Thanks for this - it would be very helpful! if you add to any about the club then it will get added to the news section in the app. At some point, I may try to do clever things such as checking tweet timings so those appear in a separate section

Hi mjhill, I've made this thread a sticky at the top of the page, so that it wont drop away and people will be able to see the excellent app you're creating.

Great work mjhill, I will be using the app.
This is exactly how a forum should work.
Would it be difficult to categorise the tweets from hertsadmike [top man!], eg #sacfcmatch and #sacfcnews so these can be split into sections within the app.

Thanks all! Good suggestion about categorising tweets - could the official tweeters do the same? That way I can easily split out match updates from general news items.

I've now added a video area (showing last 6 YouTube videos - let me know if you think there should be more available in the app). I've also tidied up the Vidiprinter display - hopefully more readable with the colour contrast. I'm now off to sunny Texas for a few days, back on Saturday morning (possibly then to make a visit to Maidenhead - depending on tiredness and what I can negotiate at home...). Then next week (and following weeks), I might look at doing some more work on the players section ie adding total attendances, goals scored, current squad etc as well as adding in logos for teams. Thanks for the ideas shared so far and keep them coming - and hope it helps those who aren't able to make it to the game to keep track of progress on Saturday. COYS!
