Gateshead Football Club footballer JJ O'Donnell has unfortunatly picked up a career threatening injury at the age of just 23. Because of this injury JJ has only a 50/50 chance of ever playing football again. Gateshead Football Club have unfortunatly stated that they will not be paying for JJ's treatment. A fund has been setup at www.gofundme.com/tkwfds to raise money towards any medical treatment JJ requires. For the full details of JJ's current situation, have a look at his Twitter feed twitter.com/JJODonnell23?lang=en-gbAs a former Saints player, I'm sure he would appreciate any support we can give him.

What is the injury ? can't see what he's done anywhere and how come Gateshead aren't paying for any treatment ? wasn't he under contract and don't they have to have medical insurance if they're professional or is Gateshead semi pro ?

He has Sesamoiditis which affects the big toe and appears to be a rare condition. Only 2 professional sportsmen have had the operation, one worked and one didn't, so it's currently 50/50 on whether he will play again after an operation. I believe that JJ signed a one year contract last summer when Gary Mills was boss. Mills has now moved onto Wrexham at the end of this season, so it looks like he's now out of contract. Current donations stand at £2355.

Can a club cancel a contract because the manager leaves ?!?
Do we know what sort of figure is needed for the operation ?
I'm sure ever saints fan wishes him the best of luck

Total cost of the operation is £7000. Fund currently stands at £2955, after only 3 days.
A years contract signed last summer would naturally come to an end around now. I have read somewhere that Gateshead allegedly can't afford to pay for the op.

The £7000 target has been reached.
A donation of £2690 from Danny Graham brought up the £7000. Sunderland footballer possibly ?

It's good to see a pro helping someone in non league, I'm sure the G men would have JJ back to train and play while looking for another club after his successful operation.

JJ O'Donnell was on the bench for Gateshead today for the first time since his career threatening toe injury in 2015. He's had a few set backs during his recovery but has finally battled back from injury.
