I thought the general idea was to bring in players during the closed season to make things better and not worse ? Who was the hot shot player that was signed from Concord Rangers ? - what happened to him. Ben Martin over Darren Locke ? Comley in the starting 11 again against Eastbourne ? WTF is going on, this is rubbish.

Hi Kroofs,
The "hot shot player" that was signed from Concord Rangers was Jack Lampe, and he was struck by what must be a fairly serious chest infection and it therefore looks like he's left the club. A very unfortunate situation and one the management could not have foreseen. I will agree that Ben Martin is not the answer to our defensive issues, but I should think he is a short-term solution to plug the gap caused by the departure of Lampe and Omar Beckles. That's one problem the management will need to solve fairly soon (although I can't help but think a Gayle-Comley defensive partnership would do the trick). Your criticism of Comley is harsh. He is certainly one of our more talented players, but for various reasons we've been unable to see the best of him so far this season. Granted, results have not been good and the visit of Bath on Saturday will be just as tricky as the previous four games. But there is only one thing for it and that's to support the team and trust that the management will get the best out of what is a relatively new but undoubtedly talented squad. It is still very early days, let's not lose sight of that.
COYS.

Personal problems have also contributed towards Lampe's departure, with a fairly major illness hampering him.
I'd much rather Locke alongside Gayle at the moment.

I'll add my support for Comley - with Corcoran out injured he could also provide some of the creativity we need to supply our forwards. Lampe and Beckles going was just one of those things - can't be helped unfortunately. If we could just get a creative midfieldr/winger I think we'll be ok. Hilliard could grow into that role but will take time moving up to this level - especially given how much stronger this league us compared to last season. Anyone else want to join Boost the Budget? ? standbyyoursaints.com/fundraising-schemes/

I haven't been able to make any of the opening four games but will be there on Saturday.
Out of interest where is Lewis Hilliard being played? When I saw him for St Neots he looked like the sort of player who needs to be central with a lot of freedom. If he's being asked to play wide I can't see how that would work.
From a distance it seems that there is a lack of pace in the squad, meaning we can't stretch teams.
Let's hope after 10 games we have a much more positive view on how our season will go.

I understand the managers may be trying to protect Jack Green a little but he's a young lad with fire in his belly and certainly out there to prove a point so why not start with him?!
We could certainly do with some of his enthusiasm and maybe it will give the rest of the lads a kick up the backside. That being said, as much I like Ben Martin, and you can't fault his loyalty, I really think it's time we dropped him and have the team getting back to basics. I don't see the point in having a target man (Thomas), when we can't play the ball on the ground, it just encourages hoofing it constantly. Would be nice to see Billy get the chance to start.
Anyway onwards and upwards!

Completely agree regarding Medlock - would really like to see him in the starting line up and Thomas on the bench as the option to throw on if an opponent looks like they are vulnerable to having their penalty area bombarded with long balls.

I completely understand the frustration, particularly for those who made a midweek trip down to Eastbourne.
But I do also think it's too early for as harsh an assessment as the one that kicks off this thread.
It's perhaps too early to judge the new players. I always think that recruitment at any level, whether Premier League or Conference South, falls into three roughly equal thirds. One third of new players will be good and will make their mark as regulars, a third will be okay, and a third won't make the grade or settle and will move on.
So we need to give them time to show which category they all fall into.
I agree about the lack of pace. We always look vulnerable when opponents run at us, particularly down the flanks, yet we don't throw the gauntlet down to other teams in the same way.
As for the comment about Jack Green – what on earth is he being 'protected' from? The harsh glare of Conference South football? The spotlight of playing in front of 487 people? The possibility of getting criticised by the Herts Ad? (That's not a criticism of your comment by the way, but of any potential decision to hold him back).
If a 17-year-old can't be given a game in the Conference South when can he?
If he's not good enough, or consistent enough, that's a different matter but if the managers are genuinely sparing him from exposure to football at this level they need to have a bit of a think. A 16-year-old kid played for West Ham at Arsenal the other week. I am not saying Jack Green is Reece Oxford but the whole notion of holding a lad back from non-league football is a case of people listening to nonsense from pundits that doesn't even hold true at the top level. It's a cliche but if you're good enough, you're old enough.

If he's being asked to play wide I can't see how that would work................ Whenever I watched him at St. Neots, he played centre mid and he looked outstanding. At the moment he is playing wide left, from time to time switching to over the right flank. I'm far from sure that we are using him to our best advantage. We need a lot more pace out wide.

Ben has been a good servant of St Albans City but I personally think any two of Gayle, Locke, Comley would be a better pairing than Ben playing I just hope it is not a case of jobs for the boys because Jimmy and Graham have done a fantastic job at the club all the way through it would be a real shame if personal issues clouded judgement.
Comments about Ben helping Borehamwood to promotion don't ring true either he hardly played for them in their run in

Interesting how somebody makes a throw away comment "the managers may be trying to protect Jack Green",and then others treat that as a fact "what on earth is he being protected from ?" Green has said that he doesn't see himself playing week in week out, just the odd thirty minutes here or there, and he is more interested in developing as a player. In my humble opinion he needs more time to develop physically as he is rather easily brushed off the ball by more stronger opponents. In the two games (Gosport and Eastbourne) I have seen him this season he has made no impact whatsoever. In time I believe he will make a decent player but in the short term he is not the answer to our problems.

I not sure what other football (if any he plays) but how is he going to develop by only playing the odd thirty minutes? Surely that just a recipe for stagnation? I only seen the two home games but other than the one goal we did score we created almost nothing. Maybe Jack Green can give us a bit more creativity, maybe not. But given how little we created so far its got to be worth a shot

I would love to see Green in the starting line-up, rather than be expected to come on as a 'super sub' and rescue a game when we are struggling. From the two homes games I have seen this season, it is clear what we are lacking most is a creative spark, so, in addition to Green starting, I would also like, if Locke is fit again, for Comley to move back into the midfield where, hopefully, he can weave a little magic. When he's on form, he's a really good player.
I don't know what is the long-term outlook for Gayle, but it would be fantastic if we could extend his loan, or, even better, resign him as he was, in my book, our man-of-the-match on Saturday by a long way.

I still say Def Com 1 and Gayle together or Locke and Gayle (if Locke is fit) pushing Coms into midfield with Corcoran out injured with JK and Chaps at the back, I agree with starting Jack and taking the game to them and if we are just going to hoof the ball to Simon Thomas maybe start with Theo and Billy instead and bring him on later if no joy

It does exclude Gayle/Comley at CB but do you not lack a bit of height there with that pairing? So might need to use combination selectively - depending on nature of opposition forwards (if they got a 6'5 centre forward) it might not be best idea. I can see reason for picking Martin (if Locke is not 100%) depending on nature of the opposition
