can't see how you have a tuyn round of fortunes with this side, no chance One positive out of all of this, porkypig actually contributing with full blown posts, instead of the usual prediction of a 3-0, or 4-0 defeat! Though I bet you're doing alright with the predictions lately!

The better team doesn't lose 1-4 to the second bottom side. I agree entirely. The better team is the one that scores most goals - it's a simple principle that has applied to football for eons. I thought about this when Newcastle won at Bournemouth recently and almost every journalist and pundit was going on about how Bournemouth were the better team with their 20 shots on goal (only 5 on target) compared to Newcastle's 2 shots (1 on target). Newcastle keeper Robert Elliot made a string of saves and yet Bournemouth were somehow robbed of the three points. Yes they played nice attacking football but is Elliot not part of the team? He played better than the Bournemouth keeper. The Newcastle strikers played better than the Bournemouth strikers if they can convert 50% of their chances into goals while Bournemouth's strikers could only get 25% of their chances on target. Interestingly, Elliot made 5 saves so the presumption is he stopped every shot that was on target. So 20 shots, 67% of possession and twice as many passes made for the better team? Nope, Newcastle won the game so they are the better team. Maybe not the most pleasant to watch and possibly not the most attacking. But they scored more goals. This idea that we were the better team in part is irrelevant and disingenuous. Who says we were the better team: the opposition manager and players, neutral observers? No, our own manager. I bet the opposition manager is very happy not to be the better team if they've just won by two or three goals. As you say, NSRC, the better team does not lose 1-4. Wherever they are in the league, the better team is the one that wins because they have completed the most important task set for them - score a goal - more times than the other team. Neither pretty passing nor possession wins games; scoring goals does. "We were the better team" - aargggh, it really makes my blood boil!

100% right, Alf. Stats, stats and more stats. That seems to be all that managers and, more especially coaches, go on about. It is total nonsense. The only stats that matter are how many goals go in one team's net and how many in the opposition's. How hard is that? Football is a simple game that doesn't need to be over complicated. A good start, when you win the ball, is to pass it on to someone wearing the same coloured shirt

Actually the better team does sometimes lose in football. It is a peculiarity of the sport that is both frustrating and also part of its charm. But, the better team does not lose 1-4 I agree with that.

But, the better team does not lose 1-4 I agree with that. Well, that depends on your definition of "better". What I am saying is that the most effective way of quantifying "better" is by most goals scored in a game. It's been that way since before football was invented in 1992.
