Here here! Players have off days but it's teams that win and lose matches. I think the club needs players, supporters, officials and owners to pull together. Mistakes may have been made but let them be a thing of the past and move forwards together. More listening, more understanding - from all quarters.

Agreed, a top centre-half for St. Albans City FC and a great captain.

Obviously couldn't face the flak from cheshuntsaint! Only joking... It's a shame because I thought he had his best (home) game for some time v Bath. There doesn't appear to be any immediate cover as James Kaloczi is at Wingate for another month; which of course doesn't mean that the 2 Gs aren't arranging a new signing as I type. Having said that I'd forgotten about Darren Locke, which doesn't alter that sentence given that he's only played a Herts Senior Cup match in the past month. Non-league football does seem to be like a revolving door some times...

Well, that's something of a surprise.
Okay, so he had a couple of off days and didn't play well at Wealdstone but the good far, far outweighed the bad. Central defenders soak up so much and their mistakes lead to conceding goals much more than players further up the pitch and so tend to get noticed disproportionately by supporters.
But it's a big loss to the team. As good as Gayle is, he's only on loan. We've lost Martin and Ward in quick succession. Locke has been unavailable, but is presumably back again soon?
Perhaps it means Gray and Golds are going to use the time we've got without a game to reinvest the saving in another centre half. Or perhaps the budget is being trimmed back for the second half of the season. Who knows? Anyone?

Unless Ben Martin has been so disappointed by the lack of posting on here that he's started this story to get some chatter started! Could there be a retraction on Monday dependent on the number of posts on Saintschat over the next 48 hours??

It is frustrating for sure.
Obviously there's so much we don't know. Whatever his frailties in individual games this season when the league leaders take one of your players it says something.
Did Boreham Wood offer him better terms? Possibly. In which case there's not a lot we could do. Or was it a case of Boreham Wood offering him a shot at winning the title. Again, can't blame him.
But with the highest matchday admission price in the league you'd hope we'd be strengthening the squad rather than weakening it. Perhaps best to wait and see if a replacement comes in.

Thanks to Ben, he's been a good servant for the club, and has played an important role. Shame to see both him and Ward leave in the same season.
Interesting that he's gone to Wood, they're doing well, so i suspect he'll have a fight on his hands to get into their starting XI straight from the off. They also signed our old friend Lewis Toomey from Hemel last week.

Sad to see Ben Martin go. Like I said he clearly is a fan of this club and clearly takes an interest in fans opinion, by reading the forums. I Was looking forward to Ben returning to his very best form that got him into team of the year at this level. Sadly, that is not to be, it's a shame he's gone to our rivals. I'm guessing he wanted to remain local and have a chance of winning trophies again. There is clearly more than meets the eye when it comes to this transfer though.

I'm guessing he wanted to remain local and have a chance of winning trophies again. That's 2 of the 3 reasons The third reason is pretty much mirroring what most of the support has been saying on here for the last few months

Not all bad is it a few points off the play off places,3 out the last four games won in the league. Will admit think we will miss ben but James Kaloczi, can fill a gap at the back as well as midfield.Maybe James and Graham had plans to bring a player in.Think most would happy with a top half finish this year and if we did it would be a success.

Is the wage budget being cut by any chance? Disappointed to see Ben leave, especially to them lot !! I suppose we won't know about the budget until we see what kind of quality replacement we get. Although, with us just 1 point out of the play-offs, I would suspect any cut would not occur until January at least after seeing how the festive games go...

Players who impressed against them... Only Comley surely? And I very much doubt they can afford him or any of out players, at the moment anyway. Lots of talk of a crisis all of a sudden after Ben's departure... I think it's all blown out of proportion (Well I hope, it is )

Wealdstone are a clown outfit.
The fact that their firm is run by the Wealdstone Raider sums them up.
They are a laughing stock.

Jimmy has Tweeted that Martin has left for purely footballing reasons. The cynic in me immediately thinks there must be more to it because the only reason anyone in football would say that someone has left for purely footballing reasons is because there's more to it than that!
But seriously, one player leaving (even the captain) does not indicate a crisis.
However, it does contradict a few things if a player of equivalent (or better) quality does not come in to replace him.
The managers talk of building a team that can go forward, perhaps press on for the play-offs in the second half of the season, or more realistically build towards it next season.
But losing the captain does not support that. And if we have the highest prices in the league, and we need 750 at those prices to break even and the commercial team is bringing in more than ever... Well, something doesn't quite add up unless a player has already been earmarked to replace Martin.
