Current Form:St. Albans City - DD Braintree Town - WW Last match:St. Albans City 0 - 0 Basingstoke Town Maidenhead United 0 - 3 Braintree Town Line-up from last outing in the league:St. Albans City - Bastock, Deeney, Smith, Magwood, Martin B., Everitt, Sulaiman, Fisher, Effiong, Roberts, Martin R. (Subs - Martin A., Sullivan, Simpson, Peters, Frater). Braintree Town - McDonald, Starkey, Jones, Bailey-Dennis, Paine, Quinton, Lechmere, Symons, Davis, Marks, Green. (Subs - Bryant, Guy, Clark, Alaile, Bruno). Top goalscorer(s):St. Albans City - Roberts & Effiong on 1 goal. Basingstoke Town - Lachmere & Marks on 2 goal. Last two league meetings between the sides:[/b] - St. Albans City 1 - 1 Braintree Town (14/11/09) - Danny Johnson put the Saints ahead before the Iron pulled one back late on through Jones. - Braintree Town 2 - 2 St. Albans City (10/04/10) - Braintree went two up through Mingle and a Bradley Quinton penalty. Saints came from behind to snatch a point with goals from Ian Dunn from the spot and James Fisher in the second-half. Latest Saints team news: Castle is not expected to make any major changes to the side that picked up a point in midweek. The only exception is that club captain Ryan Frater may well return, although the manager will no doubt have a headache over who to leave out in central defence if that is the case. It is easily the strongest position in the squad with Everitt, Ben Martin and Frater all competing for a starting place at the back. Saint King of the Castle's Final Word: Braintree have started the new season in formidable form with two consecutive 3-0 wins against Farnborough and Maidenhead. With the second of these results having what is described by Braintree fans as some of the best football they have ever seen their team play. But it's not just their attacking play, the team's defence has held strong to give them two clean sheets. They currently sit top of the table on goal difference and six points from a possible six available. Braintree have had a big squad change in the summer with 19 players leaving (Two on loan) and 16 players coming in (One loan) Robbie Martin was one of these players to leave Braintree, and as we know, joined the mighty Saints! This Saturday coming should see the long awaited arrival of the new home kit's debut. It was meant to be on show against Basingstoke but it wasn't delivered in time. However, it should be available in time for Saturday's match. A minutes silence will be held before the game in respect to former Saints player and manager Doug Parkin who died recently.

All change at Braintree town then, looking at those transfers - looks like they've gelled already though, with two wins out of two.
I think I'd be happy with a draw.
1-1
Fisher.

FT: 0-0.
Another game where we could of won it, but so could have Braintree aswell.
The first half I thought was dominated by how Braintree kept fouling our players, quite a few of these fouls were not given by a ref who looked out of his depth. Around 40 minutes in and a Braintree player was sent off for a second yellow, surely we could go on and dominate from then? But no, we didn't.
Our defence was strong once again and midfield did well but we just lacked upfront again, both Roberts and Effiong seemed scared to shoot on goal! They had the ball in good positions, but wouldn't shoot. We were the better side in the 1st half.
But in the 2nd, even with ten men, Braintree looked a good side and had the better chances, if it wasn't for Bastock and some last ditch defending, we would have lost. But we also had chances, not as many and not as clean but we were let down again by not taking chances.
Is a draw a fair result? Certainly not, based upon our play in the 1st half, but after some of Braintree's chances which were not taken, maybe it was a fair result.
We can take the positives that we are unbeaten, drew 0-0 with a team who previously won both their games 3-0 and have a solid defence and goalkeeper.

After today's result we sit 13th in the league with 3 points. Our next two opponents are in 10th (Staines Town) and 11th (Hampton & Richmond) Who are both on 4 points.

Also, forgot to mention the push on one of our players in the fist half in the Braintree box which could well have been a penalty, but ref didn't call it!

A missed opportunity in my opinion Saint. We just didn't seem to take the initiative and make our man advantage count.
This Saints side is solid at the back, industrious in midfield but unfortunately lacking that little bit of magic, creativity and flair going forward.
It was a fullback, David Deeney, who probably created our best chance to score when he went on that mazy run and ended by teeing up Adam Martin for the shot across the goal. I liked the look of Deeney, I must say. He went on a couple of good runs and his defensive play was good too.
I thought Inih looked like he was causing quite a few problems and I wasn't at all surprised to see their number 5 given his marching orders as there were several cynical fouls on Effiong leading up to that. Despite that, we never really looked like scoring. The build-up play wasn't great and our ball retention wasn't very good today.
I think a draw probably was a fair result overall but I was disappointed that we didn't come out and take the game to them in the second-half.

All I can say is we have just got to start putting the ball in the back of the net, second half lots of the players looked not bothered or just knackered. O well early days yet I think we done well against a team that looked quite strong. Bazza was outstanding today as always we would of lost the game without him, worth his wait in gold I think.

If only we had an experienced 'older head' up front with Effiong, to partner him and teach him a few things, we could have a very good side indeed. Roberts would be able to play in the 'hole' behind. The defence is rock solid and the midfield more than capable; even more so when Dedman returns.

Not really agreed about the midfield. Yesterday we had a right footer at left mid and Fisher (who i don't think is a midfielder) at right mid. Magwood played well but we need someone creative in there alongside him and Adam Martin wasn't convincing.
I can't understand why Fisher doesn't revert to right back. Then Deeney could play central midfield, where he'd offer a lot more going forward.
Up-front Effiong had a good first half but there's no point chipping it long to him as he isn't good in the air.

While we're on topic of the midfield- I think we missed having Sulaiman in midfield yesterday who usualy takes on players and gets past them (Much like Sullivan) Also, anyone else think Sullivan is better than just coming off the bench everytime?
Also, I was encouraged by Kweme's play when he came on for a little (Despite falling over the ball!)

Then Deeney could play central midfield, where he'd offer a lot more going forward. I agree with you about the midfield. That's why I said they were industrious (i.e. hardworking) rather than anything else. I thought that we were lacking in terms of retaining the ball and creating much for the forwards. Interesting point about switching Fisher and Deeney, although I wonder if Deeney is one of those players who really suits making his attacking runs from deeper in the fullback position, a bit like Peter Smith does. I think Saint is right that we missed Sulaiman. He has a bit of flair and can take on his fullback. The only doubt with Sulaiman is his end product and delivery into the box at times but he can at least provide something unpredictable on occasion. Apart from Deeney's runs yesterday, we were too predictable coming forward. Yes, way too much long ball stuff yesterday. We could do with a Solomon Shields type character in there to help retain the ball. I wonder how his recovery is coming along (ruptured Achilles, wasn't it?) and if, indeed, he will play for us this season. I also agree with Boomer that it would be good to have a more experienced partner to guide Inih Effiong. Then perhaps we could have Drew out wide cutting in from the flanks as he did last season a few times to good effect.

The thing I don't get about Effiong and Roberts in the past two matches is why they don't take shots on target, to test the keeper! There were several occasions where they both could have after holding possesion for a while. It felt like we were trying to pass it into the goal.
Fisher, certainly wasn't at his best yesterday, started okay but as the 1st half went on, started giving simple passes away, and when he was subbed in the 2nd half you could see his anger at being subbed.

I take your points but, although perhaps we didn't see it yesterday, I think the midfield does have the potential to be more than capable. With Dedman returning and hopefully also Solomon Shields around December/January, I believe we will see proof of this. We also badly missed Hassan Sulaiman yesterday. What you say about about playing a rightie at left mid is interesting. If you look at a lot of premiership teams, many also do the same - Ashley Young and Joe Cole are prime examples. It seems some top managers like the situation where they can use players on the reverse wing to cut inside and bend the ball in towards the goal. Pete Smith did this to great effect at Thurrock, resulting in two goals. I guess if we wanted to revert to the norm, we could use Pete Smith at lb with Adam Everitt at left mid, bringing back Ryan Frater at cb, although I have to say I much prefer Adam Everitt at cb. I think we need to forget about the midfield for he moment. Our real problem is our strike force and if we had had an experienced head partnering Inih up front in the first 3 games, we would have been sitting with at least 7 points and probably 9, instead of the 3 we do have.

I'd say Roberts was pretty experienced

I agree that Roberts is experienced but he would be far more effective playing behind a front two. What we need is a presence in the box who has done it before and can bring out the best in Effiong.

So I assume you would like to see a 3-5-2/3-4-1-2 formation then Boomer with Drew behind two strikers?

So, something very similar to this? If we had the strikers, this would be a quite a good formation IMO.
