For anyone who has followed the sorry saga of John McGowan trying to build flats on the Great Northern garden his plans have again been rejected - three failed planning applications and two failed appeals to the planning inspectorate. The proposals were plainly inappropriate but very little changed between each application. The managers of the pub have done a fantastic job of supporting the local community during the various lockdowns providing a a shopping hub for essential goods and then take away food and drink - the pub is rightly a registered asset of community value. There is clearly a conflict between promoting the work the club does with the community when one of the owners has repeatedly pursued a scheme which would have inevitably killed off the pub as a business and removed a community asset. There has been a lot of opposition to the proposed development each time and many people have drawn the link between Mr McGowan and the club. The pronouncements from the club therefore are treated with suspicion by many and people who were previously neutral towards the club, or supportive, have quite different views now. All a bit of a PR disaster. Hopefully as the cinema has now got permission to build a much smaller and sympathetic development facing the pub this will put any attempts to build on the pub garden to bed once and for all. The latest details are here: Planning Appeal Decision

I know I have been away from St.Albans for some time now but I had never heard of the Odyssy cinema.. I had to check it out . I first remembered it as the Capital then renamed the Odean. I am getting old!!!.My age group remember the Chequers, The Grand Palace and the Capital. They were the cinemas. I knew when the Chequers went. Ah! well.. Tempus fugit.
