THE FINAL WORD - written by Saint (Jake Ellacott)How did the Saints get on in pre-season?The Saints have had a fairly mixed pre-season campaign. They've recorded wins against local sides Ware, Royston and Potters Bar. There were, however, defeats against Premier League QPR, Azerbaijan Premier League side Gabala and Championship team Peterborough United. The only draw of the summer took place away at Colney Heath. City's final game of the summer in preparation for the league campaign was a Herts Charity Cup game at Cheshunt United, which the Saints won 2-0 courtesy of goals from Sakho Bakare and Dom Petrucci. There has been a revolution off the pitch during the summer and there have also been major changes on the pitch, with many players being signed up by the new management team. Some of the key individuals being signed or retained by the club for this season include Nick Jupp, Sol Shields, David Ijaha, Sean Shields, Ryan Moran and Jerome Walker. The most recent signing announced has been that of ex-Premier League striker Paul Furlong. He is signing on as a player and coach and is expected to give the Saints plenty of experience going into a new campaign. What does David Howell have to say about our chances this season?Howell has recently stated that his side could well surprise many people this season. The worry is that with so many new faces arriving at Clarence Park, the team will no doubt need some time to gel. However, the new manager seems hopeful that they can challenge in the league this season and push on! On the other hand, it's important to note that both David Howell and City chairman Ian Ridley have been quick to play down expectations for this season. It seems that both see this as a season as a pivotal in terms of rebuilding and consolidating. Most sensible Saints fans will probably agree but will no doubt secretly be hoping for a promotion push! Finally:It's just a brief preview this time around. Once the season has kicked off, we'll be back with our usual stats and predicted line-ups etc.! So, will the Saints start the new era on a high? Or will the Centurions give City a wake up call? Get involved in the pre- and post- match discussion in the thread below. COYS! We have a new feature to place alongside our previews this season, as one of Saints Chat's regular posters, Brummie, delves into the history books to provide us with match reports from the past. This gives a chance to walk down memory lane, or learn a little about City's past, before the next match in the present!
This week, as we have never played Cirencester Town before, Brummie has given us a typed copy of the match report of the FA Cup match v Cheltenham Town in 1992-93 (the nearest place to Cirencester).
Thanks to Brummie for the report. For the next game, we should have an old Cambridge City report!

cheers for preview/report and i remember that game. really thought that we were going places with that side and regime. Had we taken our righful place in the Conference then who knows what could have happened pre-full time days That was the fullest I'd ever known the ground as well, it'll be a bit quieter on Saturday so I'll go for 2-0 400

Hmm! "rightful place". We were second to Chesham whose rightful place it was to be promoted. Whatever, that was a great season that has yet to be bettered.
As for Saturday, there is no way to predict what may happen. I'll go for a 2-1 win, both goals from Paul Furlong in front of a slightly disappointing gate of 300.

Someone said to me that Cirencester Town have quite a small following away from home so that's likely to lower the gate. That said, I'm hoping that there will be a few curious souls at CP on Saturday who have come to check out the new regime and management in their first proper competitive home fixture. On another subject, I really like the idea of this page for new fans on the Cirencester Town website - www.cirentownfc.com/centurion-football/newfans/ - maybe this is an idea that the official SACFC website could consider.

We finished second in both seasons. We played good football in both but somehow I have fonder memories of the Clark, King, Cockram, Duffield, Risley era.

I agree, that 92/93 team was something else, I loved the 05/06 season but that team in 92 was special Hmm! "rightful place". We were second to Chesham whose rightful place it was to be promoted. Whatever, that was a great season that has yet to be bettered. When Chesham gave up their righful place it became ours ;D They didn't used to consider the 3rd placed teams in them days, wonder what would have happened to Enfield had they been allowed in from 3rd place

Good to see the chairman making the most of his contacts in the game. I believe Fabregas and Nasri might be free and could easily afford a fiver

Good performance, great result. Considering these players have only had pre-season to get to know each other and how each other play, to be 3-0 up at half-time was nothing short of remarkable.
Jerome Walker's cross for the first goal wouldn't have looked out of place in the Football League; it just begged to be put in by Rob Haworth, who threw himself at it and connected perfectly with his head.
Second goal was a 25/30-yard strike from Sol Shields, which was similar to Edin Dzeko's goal against United in the Community Shield at the weekend. It was a reasonable hit, well-directed into the corner, and while the 'keeper perhaps should have done better it was still a great goal.
The third came after about half an hour following a brilliant individual run from Sean Shields, who wormed his way into the box. It appeared to me that he had done too much and the chance had gone, but somehow he found a gap between the 'keeper and the post.
We held out well after the break, looking fairly sound at the back under some reasonable pressure. We did concede due to a decent finish on about 70mins, but fears were laid to rest by an expert finish by Paul Furlong, who latched onto a ball over the top and lobbed it perfectly over/around the 'keeper and into the back of the net.
Hugely impressed by the Saints today, and looking forward to the rest of the season. We worked hard together as a team and had some really impressive individual performances to boot. Walker, both Shields', Haworth and Furlong caught the eye, while the centre-back pairing and our left-back also looked impressive.
The only thing was our goalkeeper, who looked a bit shaky at times, but he's only a temporary solution, and anyway, we're top of the league!

Fantastic result and performance from the Saints! Hopefully this entertaining match will have fans coming back for more at CP!
I really like the midfield four of Jerome Walker and Sean Shields on the wings, plus David Ijaha and Sol Shields in the middle. In particular, I thought the two wide players were really excellent today.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining game. Plus a perfect start as the new owners, chairman, manager and players usher in a new era at the club.

I realise that I'm being a bit picky, but tbf to Cirencester I thought they played the better football but were somewhat wasteful in front of goal. Having said that, no doubt City will knit as the season goes on and play better football as they get to know each other. At the end of the day, it certainly feels a lot better winning rather than losing and we scored four fine goals. Onwards and upwards! COYS

I thought we were very efficient today and at times completely tore apart a poor Cirencester side. They had a decent first ten minutes and arguably should have been 1 up but as soon as Howarth netted a fantastic first, it was game over from then on.
The game dipped in quality and pace a little after half time which was to be expected, i think Cirencester goal really woke us up and we went for the fourth.
I thought our defence looked solid today in particular Ryan Moran who dominated in the air. Our central midfield partnership looked brilliant and not many sides will be able to deal with the physicality of Ejaha and the skill of Shields. Shields and Walker on the wings looked superb constantly causing Cirencester problems and in particular the cross for our first was unbelieveable.
I thought Howarth was class today a very big physical striker who puts him self about, great flick ons and an all round fantastic display. Dont really think much needs to be said about Furlongs effort but he truely showed his class.
Overall a fantastic day at the office and i cant wait for Tuesday now!
I felt un easy with our goalkeeper today he seemed to flap and spill a few balls and he was doing this in the warm up, but credit where credits due he did pull off a superb double save in the second half.

I thought Sean Sheids looked like a different player, i was told thats how he used to play for the youth so it's obvious Castle used to restrain him, glad he has a decent manager now to help him on
