The City Archives - The Famous Match[/u]
We have a new feature to place alongside our previews this season, as one of Saints Chat's regular posters, Brummie, delves into the history books to provide us with match reports from the past. This gives a chance to walk down memory lane, or learn a little about City's past, before the next match in the present!
Brummie has given us a real treat this week, which will be of major interest to all Saints fans. He has reproduced the Dulwich Hamlet FA Cup tie from 1922, otherwise referred to as 'The Famous Match'!
Thanks, as always, go to Brummie for delving into the City Archives to provide us with an interesting read alongside our usual match previews!

Haworth+Walker. However, Haworth was later subbed after injury.

Another 2nd half horror show, things weren't helped when Haworths replacment Bent also went off injured but we really should have had it in the bag

Hmmmmm - Quite an entertaining game in a masochistic kind of way! First half was okay, 2-0 up and cruising. Second half Arlesey started off putting city under pressure - maybe the Saints should stay on the pitch half time as the team talk seems to confuse them. But to be fair the storm was weathered and City game back into it. Then it went a bit pear shaped with injuries, substitutions and of course goals from Arlesey. Watts was also sent off for I presume an incident off the ball (I didn't see it). All very frantic and not lot of skill ruled the day. Not sure yet if things are going to get better, but there did seem a reasonable amount of effort from the team today. I do not like to pick on individual players but what does Ijaha actually do? To me he just seems to run about avoiding the ball. Still what do I know after all he was MOM. As always undecided

Arlesey Town have to be one of the worst sides ive seen at Clarence Park this season. For 85 minutes, St.Albans City dominated the game, with flashes of that passing game David Howell talks about. Arlesey Town on the other hand produce nothing of substance. Then out of no where we are a man down and drawing the game 2-2. It's frustrating as it's 3 points lost rather than 1 point gained.
St. Albans City are still very much a work in progress and that what intrigues me. We have to remember that 4 months ago we didnt even have a team, so to expect us to rise to the top is unrealistic. The manager will need a season to build a squad for next year, set the foundations and then during the summer add the quality of players needed so we can start to look forward again. Then and only then should the squad and manager be judged. For now we are going to have to bear with but unfortunatley patience is a lost art form.

How come it says you have chosen to ignore asaintreborn where i posted? Have you chosen to ignore yourself? ;D I wasn't sure if you could even do that, actually! But, perhaps you've clicked on the ignore button for your own profile by accident. If so, try clicking this button ---> in the profile by your post. That should sort it out.

To me he just seems to run about avoiding the ball. Still what do I know after all he was MOM. As always undecided I thought the team put in a decent amount of effort and played very well in patches. It was just that mad two minutes in the second-half. The first Arlesey goal was like a hammer blow to the team and they just switched off. Before we knew it, Arlesey were level. During that first-half, the Saints looked comfortable and Arlesey looked nowhere near them. I think Arlesey will certainly feel themselves to have been very lucky to have come away with anything. I can't agree with you about Ijaha, Canarysaint. I think he is a solid midfielder and certainly one of our better players at the moment. I'm a fan of him. Two points dropped, to be pedantic. But yes, absolutely sums it up for me. I agree Asaintreborn. Patience is certainly needed. Let's hope we can get a little run together soon. Bedford Town away next. They won 4-2 away at Cirencester Town today and they have Drew Roberts hammering in the goals so far this season. Could be a tough one.

Ijaha to me is a very powerful midfield enforcer tries to break up play and does a very good job of it. There are times where i feel he doesnt make himself available for the short ball for throw on etc and what frustrates me is he is always free. Nobody marks him because they know its gonna be lauched up the line, same with freekicks. We are certainly lacking a central midfielder who is comfortable on the ball and can keep it for long periods. A midfielder that complements the Workhorse that is Ijaha. So in answer to your question I think Ijaha does his job perfectly and asking him to be anything more is completely un realistic.

I thought that a draw was a fair result because Arlesey were the better side in the second half after we had dominated the first. It looked like we were the victims of another joke sending off. How many times is this going to happen this season? I have to say that Arlesey were one of the nastiest niggliest sides that I have seen down the Park for many years. One player in particular, when he wasn't throwing himself down screaming every time he got touched was running up to officials waiving imaginary cards in their faces like he was playing in Serie A and not the Southern League. Ridiculous.

Cheers all - I shall observe the No 4 in a new light as I take on your comments. BTW I was not implying that he's a bad player, it was just that I did not honestly cotton on to what his role was supposed to be.

I'm a big Sol Shields fan but his poor retention of the ball in midfield yesterday went a long way to explaining why we thre away two points.

A fully fit Sol Shields is the answer! I thought he was fully fit but a victim of rotation Howell explained in an interview that he was resting Sol Shields due to him not being fully fit. I think he had a back injury most recently.
