How did the Saints get on in their last game?

The Saints drew 1-1 away at Arlesey last weekend. City had the best of the opening exchanges but fell behind on 18 minutes when Drew Broughton, who was making his debut, slotted home Chris Marshes' ball across the area.

The first-half soon petered out, but City came out after half-time with renewed impetus. Unfortunately, although St Albans pushed forward, several chances to pull level were wasted. As the game entered injury time, the Saints finally got the goal that their play had deserved when Newton turned home Lansiquot's cross to score his first for the club.

What did David Howell have to say about it?

Howell was disappointed with the result against Arlesey Town. He felt that the team were leg weary and that they defensively struggled. The manager was extremely critical of the back four and said that defensively it wasn't one of our best performances. The game was far too open, the Saints boss said. He was also critical of his forwards, Sakho Bakare and Simon Martin.

To get a goal in the last minute was the one positive, said Howell, because the side just kept trying and didn't give up. The wind was difficult and the boss felt that Arlesey set up their stall and attempted to counter us. He said that our players have to be able to deal with that and explained that he felt we didn't manage to do so. Howell was also very critical of the set pieces by his side during this match.

We have a new feature to place alongside our previews this season, as one of Saints Chat's regular posters, Brummie, delves into the history books to provide us with match reports from the past. This gives a chance to walk down memory lane, or learn a little about City's past, before the next match in the present!

This time, Brummie has given us a typed report of a cup match against Arsenal in 1956. Over to Brummie for the details!

25th September 1956

ST ALBANS CITY v ARSENAL

St Albans City were knocked out of the East Anglian Cup competition last night, when they lost to a young Arsenal side at Clarence Park, but they were not disgraced, indeed, if it had not been for the Arsenal players’ superior fitness the Citizens might have contrived a win.

Arsenal’s strength lay in their fast and tricky wingers, who constantly spelt danger for St Albans’ defence. At the other end the Citizens forwards continually played into Arsenal’s hands by delaying the final pass.

Considering the slippery conditions some first class football was served up. Although play deteriorated near the end. During the opening minutes St Albans seemed overawed by their illustrious opponents but they quickly settled down and took the lead in the eighth minute.

A foul on G Head resulted in F COLLINGS driving the ball into the net from 25 yards before Goy, the Arsenal goalkeeper, had time to move. But this success was short lived.

A good run and centre by left back Dodson brought Prebble to his knee but he only pushed the ball to D BARNETT who slammed the ball into the roof of the net.

Arsenal took the lead through a bad refereeing decision. One of their forwards fell over the outstretched leg of Curran as he pushed the ball away and from the resultant penalty kick McGREEVEY made no mistake.

St Albans fought back and began to worry the Arsenal defence., their spirited efforts being rewarded when G HEAD converted a penalty kick for hand ball.

Within two minutes the Citizens were ahead when inside-right J NORRIS, who was continiously harassing the opposing defenders, got the ball 15 yards out and shot hard and low into the net.

Following some indifferent play after the interval Arsenal drew level again through BARNETT and seven minutes later they went ahead when Vernon netted after Barnett had worked the ball through the Citizens defence.

They piled on the pressure soon after this and got their fifth goal ten minutes from this when VERNON beat Prebble after receiving the ball from a seemingly offside position.
