Howell has just posted the City team which played the first half vs Belarus, and was leading 1-0 at HT: (Simon Martin was the goalscorer) N Jupp; C Seeby; R Watts; D Ijaha; J Gray; A Everitt; S Shields; M Hyde; L Toomey; S MARTIN; R Graham.

O.Cleva....is probably, Ollie Cleaver the ex-Histon defender, E.Adjei is presumably the ex-Peterborough junior, Edward Adjei, a striker.
Not very convinced on the quality, but it is very early on. I think Howell saying that he only needs 3 or 4 new players is a bit naive.

every manager only needs three or four players, but they sign a dozen & still need three or four. Howell brought in his old players & mates last season . So this year he will need an improved budget to get an improved team. Will he get one ? Do we gamble & spend in he hope we have a cup run to keep the players long term. or is a season in mid table acceptable

I didnt see either game: yes we MUST take a chance, get a top drawer striker, make us top of the league, win in the FA Cup and then it should go well. The opposite is mid table medicority and all that goes with it. Essex4Ever xx

Any views on Danny Spendlove after his second half appearance against Belarus? Looked v useful for Ware and Wealdstone and could be an asset if he's trained on. Also is there any news of Howard Newton...I thought he was impressive towards the end of last season.

Not yet, but as i have said before it is a bit early....however, i am concerned that the players who have been mentioned so far as triallists are not Blue Square South standard. Howell had stated last season that that was what he was looking for. Richard Graham WAS of that standard and more, but is now 33, Hyde is a player of great ability but is now 38 etc.
If Newton has joined Met Police for financial reasons (and there may well be other reasons) then it might tell us something about our playing budget.

Isn't Met Police a team made up of serving police officers? If so, t'lad's decision to join the Boys in Blue (as a day job) and play for them on a Saturday tells us nothing about our playing budget, surely? If anyone thinks that playing for a semi-pro football club, even The Mighty Saints, will provide sufficient income to maintain a Ferrari, SUV for the missus, public school education for the kids and a life of leisure then he should think again. Good luck to t'lad from me.

The Met Police FC relaxed their rules about only playing serving officers a long time ago. They have been recruiting better players over the last few years, hence their improved league status etc.

Oh right. Thanks M&S. Was Newt quoted as saying that he joined Met Police "for financial reasons"?

... or a flashing blue lamp on a power cord that connects to the cigarette lighter and can be clipped to the roof of his club Ferrari. Now that would be tempting! In any event, it's no more than idle speculation that he left due to the playing budget that Owlsley (sp?) has been allowed for the coming season. Me? I feel that a place in Europe is a realistic target.

Bad news about Newton, he was one of the players I felt we def needed to keep and one would say Met Police is a step down so are they throwing cash around?

Looks good to me....you can rely on my £2 on Saturday. In the old days at certain clubs every programme had a unique number printed on the front (Lucky Programme Number) and there was a draw at half time for a cash prize. Whether these days such an idea would increase sales sufficiently to justify the prize I don't know but perhaps its worth considering......or am I just rambling again

Agreed, a really nice looking programme. Here is the latest player news from the St. Albans City official website: www.sacfc.co.uk/index.php/news/-latest-club-news/1950-graham-signs-as-saints-add-to-strong-nucleus.htmlQuick summary with confirmed players in bold: Midfielder Richard Graham [...] has signed Southern League forms and will bring experience and a winning mentality to City, having helped Dartford to promotion to the Blue Square Premier last season. Graham will join striker Lewis Toomey as new faces whom Saints supporters get to see for the first time against Barnet and Blue Square Premier favourites Luton Town at home on Monday. Goalkeeper and last season's Player of the Year Nick Jupp returns, along with defenders Chris Seeby, James Gray, Moussa Diarra, Matt Cutchey and Anton Blackwood. In midfield, Sean Shields, Micah Hyde, David Ijaha and Ryan Watts have also agreed terms while Simon Martin is back up front. Howell is continuing his search for reinforcements of the right quality for a promotion push and will also be looking to several of last season's outstanding youth team to make the step up to the Evo-Stik Premier.
