Toomey - A Hemel fans opinion (from SPL forum) :-
" i'd say that based on his early form last season when he was actually fit and eager, he is the brightest young prospect i've seen at Hemel for a long long time."

I hope he does well for you Saints, as I said on the SL forum Toomey suffered last season in my opinion by being played when not at full fitness, but when he was fit and on form he was flying. having seen St Albans rip us to shreds during our last meeting I wouldnt immediately identify Toomey as a player who could easily fit in to what seemed like a physical yet skillful and experienced team, as he's young and relatively lightweight, but good luck to him.

I'd like to know who we have/are retaining from last seasons squad before any new signings so as to see what and who we need in.

From Howell on Twitter: 'St Albans City FC 1st of 3 open trials completed as an impressive turnout of 80+ hopeful players descend on Westminster Lodge'

I am surprised that we haven't made any significant signings yet. It was the same last season, or perhaps it isall being kept secret ?
I am sure that Dave Howell has some targets, and he has said himself that we need at least 4-5 new players who can operate at a better level than this. I can't bear the thought of another season "building a team from scratch" whilst regularly getting hammered by teams who we should be capable of beating.
What has happened to Sol Shields for example, is Seeby ok now, is Jupp staying, etc. ?

I actually went along to the trials on Saturday to give some support to a few friends trying out. I can say that Sol Shields was indeed at the trial but didn't impress me at all. Overall I think they were surprised with how many players turned up and especially given the exercises they were asked to perform, it was hard to judge who was actually any good. I know for a fact you could have put some of our best players into that trial and they wouldn't stand out. A very strange trial and I bet some good players walked away without being asked back due to the exercises. DH seemed to ask back a lot of players he knew which poses the question, if they were any good, why haven't you bought them into the fold before? I will however keep faith and trust in his judgement. Onwards and upwards!

Hammered might be a bit strong, but we did concede 77 goals last season, the third worst in the division and 36 of those were at home. We improved for a while, but then finished very badly. Perhaps 4-1, 4-0 defeats aren't hammerings, but 6-1 and 6-0 might be.
The defence needs seriously strengthening if we are to make progress.

we did concede a lot of goals but that wasn't your point. IF we were capable of beating those teams we wouldnt be in this division
(we were on the beach one of those score lines you mention.)

Onwards and upwards! Sol Shields is good enough to play at Evo-Stik League Southern Premier level and probably at least a couple of divisions above, if he fit. Therein lies the problem and he has been out a long time. Let's hope he is on the way back. He could do a great job for us.

Agreed, Boomer. Sol Shields has plenty of talent. Let's just hope he can get fit and start playing regularly again.

Saints news in the Non League-Paper this week. Just a few brief quotations from Howell below:
I wonder which player it is that is left from the first training session?
Which youth players are most likely to step up to the first team this season? Howell mentions three or four?
Will we get in a clinical striker capable of finding the back of the net on the regular basis? Toomey is a striker but still young and didn't score too many for Hemel, did he?
Plenty of questions as we slowly approach pre-season!

Could be a good signing, certainly got more recent pedigree than Furlong did

Since 2007 McGleish has scored 71 goals in 217 appearances. He averaged a goal in every two games in his spell at Wycombe, but mostly averages one in three or less.

Yeah but that is always at a higher level should be good for 20+ at this level, could be an interesting young and old partnership up front !
