The news that we are to start Barry Hayles on Friday is concerning me.
Yet again Howell has brought in a player who is well passed it. Lets look at Paul Furlong for example. Complete waste of time.
Its time he brought in younger players who have experience at this level.
Last year time and time again Howell was shown up to not really have a clue.
I hope i'm wrong but i fear its going to be more of the same and his inevitable sacking at Christmas for under performing.

Mr Little, the season has even started and you are saying David Howell will inevitably be sacked by Christmas. What a miserable pessimist you are. We have signed a twenty-one year striker and have had a bid for the best striker in the league (Craig Hammond) turned down,we have also signed an experienced centre half and are trying to sign another. We have also kept the majority of our best players from last season. We have not signed Barry Hayles yet, I think the manager wants to have a look at him in Wednesdays friendly against Stevenage, before he makes an offer. It is not easy persuading top quality players to play in the Southern League, but Howell and Ridley seem to be trying their best to be assembling a team that will challenge this season. I for one will be right behind the boys come the eighteenth of August at Banbury.

I am behind the players and team but i am a realist. I will applaud when we do well, and be unhappy and critique when we play badly. After watching Howell last season, it is clear for all too see that he does not know what he is doing and is out of his depth.

The thing is, we've done neither yet, so your lack of faith in the side and David Howell seems a little bit unjustified. Everybody saw the improvement in the team after Christmas last season, and we're all hoping the coming year will be a continuation of this obvious progression. As lonecrank says, there have been a couple of decent signings and perhaps some more on the way so, in my view, we have every reason to be optimistic about our prospects. You say you're 'behind the team', but predicting the manager's sacking by Christmas suggests otherwise. Of course, you may not share my optimism but it does seem a little harsh to be forecasting our downfall before a competitive ball has been kicked.

By this I mean that if we are not comfortably in the playoffs / challenging for the title he will lose his job.

Deary me... This club has such fickle fans, it is almost embarrassing sometimes, even if we were top of the league, there would be someone who complains about the team and our performances! Hayles has a very good previous record, and could well do a very, very good job at this level, there is no need to complain about it all yet, we haven't even finished pre-season!

No harm in looking at him tomorrow, I would also voice some concerns about a 40yr old striker but he can either be a Brian Stein, as in superb, or Paul Furlong, as in a bit disappointing, we won't know until we look at him
I would also think that we were weren't going to just give up on signing Hammond

This may work or it may not, if we sign Hayles but what I do know is that signing ex- pros on their way down in the past at CP has not proved too successful. It has to be seen as a short short term fix. Several clubs have been tracking Hayles over the last few weeks so, for that reason alone, he is unlikely to come cheap and will surely have a substantial overall effect on the budget, if he does join us. I would like to have seen us go after a younger striker in the mould of Hammond, Palmer or even Effiong. Any of these would have been a very sizeable upgrade on what we have at present (and likely a more cost effective alternative to Hayles). If we had made an approach for Hammond back in May/June before he signed a new contract with Cambridge City, maybe we would have been more successful. It has been mentioned that Hammond is not for sale; everyone is for sale at the right price. If he was our preferred choice then perhaps we need to up the ante.
On another note, why are we still persisting with peripheral players, who have been playing in pre-season games, who were clearly nowhere near good enough last season and will not be good enough this term, if promotion is to be attained. If they are not to be retained, it is unfair to all concerned, especially the player.
Onwards and upwards.

i dont see us getting promoted to many of the squad from last season simply aren't good enough i'm afraid mr howell isn't up to the job and he won't last the season out, we will finish in the top half of the table but nothing better.

centurion, as you tip us to lose virtually every week, finishing in the top half of the table would be quite a feat. Are you related to MrLittle by any chance ?

i am only basing it on what i have seen us do last season, i just don't think this guy is up to the job and as for the team its not good enough to get promotion, unfortunately there some sides in league who paying out silly money ie st. neots!

Just thought i would visit from truro City to tell you that you won't be disappointed with Barry Hayles. When i first saw him play it was obvious that he won't win any sprinting races and we weren't sure, however he quickly won us all over. His hold up play is excellent and he brings others into the game, he is so strong and has quick feet, defenders struggle to get the ball of him and you will see him shrug off 2/3 defenders and score a goal. i would bet he will score 15/20 goals for you this season. We would have been happy to see him for another year, but i guess he doesn't need all the money issues going on down here and truro is a long way for him to come. Good luck for the season and we will be keeping an eye out for your results as he is a top class bloke.
