Bit of an odd one this, but a mate of mine is a Wealdstone fan. They played Hendon yesterday and drew 1-1, which was a bit of surprise result as Wealdstone are going well.
Anyway, I saw in the Non-League Paper today that one of Hendon's players was Michael Bryan, who started at QPR and played 20-odd games for Watford, then got jettisoned when the Zola regime came in. He's clearly lost his way, but I thought he definitely had something about him.
My mate says he was the best player on the pitch, by far, at Wealdstone yesterday.
I just wondered how recruitment works at this level? Presumably a lot of it is down to contacts and money, but how much freedom do clubs have to go looking for players at a similar level and try to poach them?
It just struck me that a decent player like Bryan was playing at Hendon which is, arguably, a lower level than Saints, seeing as they are not in the hunt for the play-offs in their division.

and Hendon have just implemented a wage cut for all players. Definitely worth pursuing.

recentconvert, it all depends on whether he is 'on contract' or not. Mainly due to the perilous nature of finances at this level the majority of players are not on contract. We have the three youngsters Bailey,Kaloczi andTaylor signed up and of course Roy Of The Rovers. Clubs quite often implement budget cuts halfway or three-quarter way through the season, having too many players with contracts makes this difficult.
If 'your man' does not have a contract with Hendon then we could make a Seven Day Approach. This means that we inform Hendon of our interest in the player, then after seven days have elapsed we can then talk to him, agree terms, and he could start playing for us mor or less straight away.
I think Hendon might argue with you about being at a lower level than us though !

Thanks for the info. I assumed that the transfer window didn't apply, is that correct? Is there any kind of transfer deadline or can new players join at any point?
(When I said Hendon are at a lower level, what I meant was that they are mid-table and very unlikely to get in the play-offs,whereas Saints are right in the mix.)
