I've just read in the players in + out thread that Loick Pires has finally been released and it made me think about the number of forwards we've tried this season and how difficult it seems to be to find good, effective goalscorers at this level.
So far this season, we've tried out the following forwards alongside (or instead of) John Frendo.
Loick Pires – scored twice against Ware but was soon sent out on loan. Didn't look good enough for this level.
Elliott Buchanan – didn't last five minutes.
Lee Clarke – not signed to play as a striker but pressed into action as a number 9 a few times, notably when Frendo went to Spain for the weekend.
Geoff Mitchell – looked decent in the 2-2 draw with Bromley. Powerful and a good presence but a very unconventional running style. Cleared off to Canvey Island, which didn't seem to please the manager too much, but didn't last long there either.
Jon Nouble – Another tall striker who, like Pires and Buchanan, didn't look strong enough to play as a target man, nor quick enough. Had a few brief moments but wasn't getting enough time on the pitch to make an impact.
Cameron Lancaster – I haven't seen enough of him to make a judgement yet.
Anyway, my point is, why is it so difficult to find forwards / strikers who can make a difference in this league? Frendo has scored six in the league, which is not a terrible return but compared to what he's used to scoring at the lower level it must feel like a barren season.
