HEMEL V ST ALBANS PREVIEW
By Marc Willmore
The Tudors are now on a run of twelve consecutive home league and cup games without defeat, winning six of the last seven of those. Last time here at Vauxhall Road, we drew 1-1 with Havant & Waterlooville. Nicke Kabamba, our recent signing from Burnham, scored his second goal in his two successive appearances to put The Tudors ahead, however The Hawks equalised late in the second half. Last week, on Boxing Day, we drew 1-1 with today’s opponents St Albans City at Clarence Park. The Saints took a first half lead through John Frendo, then yet again this local derby was settled with a late equaliser—this time captain Jordan Parkes scored a fantastic goal as full time neared to earn The Tudors a point.
This is the fourth consecutive season we’ve met our neighbours St Albans City in the league. Although our clubs have faced each other fifty-five times in various competitions over the last one hundred and seven years, the vast majority of those games have been cup ties. Prior to 2011/12, The Tudors and The Saints had only met in the league in the 1908/09, 1909/10 (Herts County Western Division) and 1983/84 (Isthmian Division Two) seasons. Once the Saints were relegated to the Southern League Premier Division in 2011, we met in that league for three consecutive seasons and during the summer of 2014 both our clubs gained promotion to the Conference South.
Going in to this game today both Hemel and St Albans are on 29 points, one place apart in the league table (10th and 11th) separated by goal difference, however Hemel have two games in hand. Following our meeting on Boxing Day, while The Tudors had a rest, The Saints were away to Sutton United on Sunday, losing 2-1.
