Deal Town - FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round This Saturday our 2015/16 FA Cup campaign gets going and we welcome Deal Town of the Southern Counties Eastern League to Clarence Park. The Saints have never previously played Deal, who are nicknamed The Hoops in recognition of their distinctive playing kit. The Hoops have already played six games in the competition, their three previous ties all going to replays. In the Extra Preliminary Round they hosted and beat Worthing United by 7-1 after a goalless draw in Sussex. In the Preliminary Round they beat Horsham 2-1 away again in Sussex, after a 1-1 home draw. In the First Qualifying Round they defeated Whitstable Town 2-0 on their own ground after a 0-0 draw away. The FA Cup is without doubt a great knock-out competition and the Saints will looking to go forward into the draw for the Third Qualifying Round.

Interesting that D&R have allowed Gayle to be cup tied so they clearly don't see him having a future there

See the attendance was 351 Clearly the £15 admission had an affect on the attendance.

The big question of the day was Deal or No Deal...
I tried to persuade a friend to come along but he wasn't interested at £15, so I opted to join my Wealdstone-supporting mate at their game against Biggleswade Town.
Good to see they got the job done but less encouraged by Jimmy Gray's assessment of the play on the Herts Ad site. Sounds like a scrappy affair.
Still, getting through to the next round is what counts and there's another couple of weeks to improve things before the 3rd qualifying round tie.
Wealdstone would have been happy with a scrappy 2-1 instead of a scrappy 1-1 and the prospect of a tricky away replay. They got 1-0 up and created a few chances but paid for not scoring again and Sam Merson (son of Paul) scored an equaliser for Waders, who then had chances to score a winner as Stones were rocking at the back.
Based on today's evidence, we're a better side than Wealdstone – just.

Based on today's evidence, we're a better side than Wealdstone – just. We had a bit of an experimental feel to the line up today - felt that we we were giving much needed match time to the likes of Scott Thomas, Luke Allen and new signing Harry Crawford - in fact, more like a pre-season friendly but we got the job done albeit a spluttering performance. Momemts when team flowed well (when they played the ball around) but could also be very aimless for long periods of the game. Interested therefore in whether or not Wealdstone were playing their full strength side or like us giving valuable game time to certain players

See the attendance was 351 Clearly the £15 admission had an affect on the attendance. Doesn't seem that way. Looking at F.A. Cup 2RQ ties at CP in recent years, today's attendance seems to stand up well. Par seems to have been around 300/400 at this stage of the competition, with the figure generally increasing round on round.

Having been at Wealdstone yesterday I would suggest that they perhaps learned a thing or two about attendances from St Albans at last year's FA Trophy tie!!

Jimmy pulling no punches and I have to agree - personall I still feel like we are a team in transition despite the long pre-season and start to the full season - starting to wonder whether there's an issue with our scouting network?! No matter how experimental or returning to fitness the side was on Saturday, we should be stuffing Deal Town, and playing half decent football as we do IMHO

Jimmy pulling no punches and I have to agree - personall I still feel like we are a team in transition despite the long pre-season and start to the full season - starting to wonder whether there's an issue with our scouting network?! No matter how experimental or returning to fitness the side was on Saturday, we should be stuffing Deal Town, and playing half decent football as we do IMHO 'Transition' seem to a euphemism in sport to simply describe a team that are not very good- the England ODI side seem to be permanent transition . I agree we would be beating Deal comfortably but we have realistic in terms of league given our budget we always likely to be bottom half. i found the chairman comments at the beginning of the season utterly mystifying. You cannot argue with the managers record in the time they been in charge and I am not for one moment suggesting their positions should be anything but 100% save. Supporting the managers does mean you cannot ask questions. I have three First, player turnover. In his post-match interview JG seemed to talking about shipping players out. Have we got the balance right between being active in trying to improve the squad and seeking a degree of stability? Are we sometimes too quick to rush to judgement on players? One example, I know he is a player who divided opinion, but were Billy Medlock performances so consistently poor as to warrant shipping him out so early. If players knew they had had a minimum of half a season, essentially regardless of how they play, might they not play with more freedom/confidence? Also if we are constantly moving players in and out it would suggest that systems that we have in place for initially identifying players are flawed. Second, style. Quite apart from aesthetic considerations does being so direct all the time work. We are very predictable. Would it not be more effective to mix it up a bit more. Use the long ball more selectively. The players need to know that if that take reasonable risks, not a Cruyff turn in our box, they will not be hammered for it when it goes wrong. Finally, when I been sitting in earshot of the dugout I noticed that Hilliard seems to come in for a lot of stick from the management. Overall, he has not really impressed me (save his goal) but if they are going to play him I think the management should support him more during games and tone down the criticism .

I do think that Luke Allen and Billy Gibson (who got both the assists) do add more urgency to the team. Harry Crawford could be interesting but on Saturday looked a bit like he was playing with a team of strangers - which of course was true!
And Corcoran is only a couple of weeks away from a return now - again he will add a lot more in midfield. I do agree that it would be nice to now see some stability as I think there is more quality player for player this season that we had last season.
