Hello all,
So, we have been thrown together in the FA Cup this season then, as far as I know the first time our 2 clubs have crossed paths, so I thought I would give you a bit of info about our club etc. I would think this will be the first visit to Blundell Park for the vast majority of your fans.
The traditional “away fans” pub unfortunately burnt down a number of years ago but The Mariners Trust have taken over the running of the bars inside the ground now and have installed Sky Sports so any early kick-off game can be watched there if wanted. The only place to drink near to the ground is The Blundell Park Hotel just across the road which usually welcomes away fans but is rather small and does get quite busy as the usual home fans pub The Imperial which was the traditional home fans pub has also closed down now too. A sign of the times these days unfortunately. If you arrive early enough your best bet would be to drink in Cleethorpes Town Centre.
For anyone coming by train, then Cleethorpes is the nearest station (about a 15-20 minute walk to the ground), whereas Grimsby station is over 2 miles away. For any real ale drinkers, there is a Camra listed pub (The No.2 Refreshment Rooms) on the platform at Cleethorpes and there are several other pubs around the Market Place and High Street areas including a recently opened Wetherspoons (The Colleseum Picture House) on the High Street.
If you have time and fancy sampling our famous fish and chips then Steels Corner House in Cleethorpes Market Place is only a restaurant, not a takeaway but is highly recommended. Their Jumbo Haddock and chips is legendary even though it's like stepping back in time 50 years when you enter. For takeaway fish n chips the best 2 are Ernie Becketts just across the road from Steels and The Ocean Fish Bar (which is also a restaurant) along St. Peters Ave which is the main shopping street, just off The Market Place. I’d recommend avoiding the chippys on the actual seafront or promenade though as these cater mainly for the visiting daytrippers/holidaymakers. There is also "The Mariners" and " Gr8 White Fish" chippies near the ground but these are not as good as the 3 mentioned earlier. Wherever you go, remember to order Haddock as Cod in these parts is only fit for pet food and visiting Yorkies. There is also a McDonalds bang outside the ground if any of your fans prefer that plastic muck.
If you are getting off the train at Grimsby then there is a Wetherspoons pub right outside the station and several pubs within a few hundred yards too. However it’d be advisable to either get a taxi (there is a rank at the station) which would cost about £6-£7 or you can catch a bus. Both the No 9 and No 3, which runs every 15 minutes will drop you right outside the ground and costs about £1.50.
If you are coming by car then the ground is fairly well signposted. If you are coming in from the M180/A180 then just carry straight on as you come into Grimsby and follow signs for Cleethorpes. After you have gone over the flyover by the docks carry straight on at the lights. The road turns to a single carriageway here. At the next set of lights it turns back into a dual carriageway and then at the next set of lights when it revert to single carriageway again the ground is on your left about half a mile further behind the McDonalds. If coming in from Lincoln on the A46 then again, follow signs for Cleethorpes and the ground is well signposted when you get there. No parking at the ground but plenty of street parking available in the side streets of Grimsby Road.
For anyone who is staying overnight then you should be able to get a fairly decent B&B in the Isaacs Hill area for about £25-£30 and you’re just a few hundred yards away from the centre of Cleethorpes and the pubs and club.
Safe journey and I hope you enjoy the day but not the result.
I'm not sure what the 2 clubs have agreed for admission prices but our usual entry for away fans in £18 but if you want to save a couple of quid on match tickets there is an early bird offer if tickets are booked in advance. Our away end is £18 on matchdays but you can get tickets for £16 if you book them early by calling our ticket office on 01472 605050. You can book tickets for the early bird price and pick them up at the ticket office before the game. It maybe that the 2 clubs will agree a reduced price for this game though.

Many thanks Harry, I have already booked myself and Mrs Stalbanandy into the St James Hotel in Grimsby for the Saturday night. Any tips on nice restaurants around Grimsby town centre? Preferably steakhouse or Italian

Preferably steakhouse or Italian To be honest there's not that many decent restaurant in The Town C entre, you need to go a bit further afield. There are 2 decent enough place though which are Sage and a greek restaurant The Othello. The best place for a decent pub meal though is The White Hart.
Not much nightlife in The Town Centre really most of the action happens in Cleethorpes.
Enjoy your stay.

Many thanks Harry, I have already booked myself and Mrs Stalbanandy into the St James Hotel in Grimsby for the Saturday night. Any tips on nice restaurants around Grimsby town centre? Preferably steakhouse or Italian Hi Andy, Just some advice mate and please don't be put off by this but I wouldn't recommend St James to anyone. Both St James and the Queen Elizabeth are the 2 main hotels in Grimsby but are of a very poor standard and, and please don't be offended by this, both thrive on ' newcomers ' who don't know the place to book in and stay there. You would be much better staying in a b and b on issacs hill. Plenty of them, cheap as chips and literally 1 minutes walk 1 way into Cleethorpes, especially for the night life, and the other way 10 mins walk or a 5 min bus journey straight down Grimsby road for Blundell Park. St Jame's is miles away from the footy ground to boot! You really don't even need to be going into Grimsby if i'm honest. There's even a newly built Premier Inn in a beautiful spot next to the boating lake and cinema complex in Cleethorpes and even getting off at Cleethorpes train station is a world apart from getting off at Grimsby! Anyways, sorry if i'm making Grimsby sound like a horror story but just telling it how it is. I live right next to the footy ground and was born in Grimsby but I very, very rarely venture into it! Safe journey and maybe meet you boys on Cleethorpes High Street for a pint <>< UTM ><>

I'm afraid Andy, I'd have to agree with Omar Bogle. The best thing you can do is cancel your room with the St.James hotel (I'm sure they'll give you your £15 back) and book into the aforementioned B&B's, Premier Inn or even the Kingsway hotel if you want to push the boat out and travel back 30 years. Cleethorpes Market Place is full of pubs and eateries, the curry houses are particularly good. Further up the hill you'll find Willys pub, The Smugglers, The Notts and Riverside wine bar, all along side the best curry house in Cleethorpes, The Agrah. This area doesn't tend to be frequented by 18 year old, WKD drinking lunatics and is more relaxed. Enjoy your stay anyway, the beach in Cleethorpes is lovely, something I think we take for granted with it being on our doorstep

Many thanks Grimsby lads. Have now cancelled the Grimsby hotel and booked into the Dovedale in Cleethorpes. I look forward to frequenting some nice relaxed pubs in Cleethorpes on the Saturday night. Any pubs around that play soft rock + 80's stuff? We are getting on abit!

Good choice Andy, the Dovedale is really nice and the restaurant is superb if you decide to eat there. You're about a minutes walk from the beach. More importantly you're prob about a 30 min walk from the ground which isn't so bad as there are plenty of hostelries on the way. At the end of Albert Road (beach end) take a left for the market Place and the mayhem, or a right and slightly uphill to the more refined (if that's possible in (Cleethorpes) places that I mentioned earlier. Enjoy!

Will Wagner be attending next Saturday? God I hope not, he attended a game a few weeks back and it was tragic. We're going to be lucky if we get 3000 anyway, don't want him to put any more off!

There will be more than 3,000 just from St.Albans, and you are lucky that Steve Clark and Phil Wood aren't available !

Thanks Marinermad, have now booked a meal in the Dovedale restaurant for the Saturday night. Must say the booking of tickets on the Grimsby website is a bit confusing. Have paid for my ticket and ticked on 'collection only' as they state they don't send any by post but the final confirmation page and email I received both state delivery address as my home address. Would be interested to hear from other Saints fans if they are suitably confused? Also now confused if we collect our tickets from Mrs Walker in the club shop or the Ticket Office. Any help Grimsby fans would be greatly appreciated?

Can't comment on The Dovedale as a hotel but each time I've been there for a meal it's been very good and as has been said, you're right in the middle of Cleethorpes there. If you walk to the end of the road towards the seafront you have plenty of pubs/clubs if you turn left towards The Market Place or The High Street which is where the majority of the action happens but if you turn right you still have The Notts, The Riverside, The Smugglers and Willys (which is also a microbrewery) which are, shall we say, for the more "mature" drinkers. Enjoy your stay Andy.

Once again many thanks Harry. I will enjoy my stay whatever the result although I'd love to repay the advice you boys have given by giving the low down on St Albans if we managed to earn a replay. I have very fond memories of a great day out at Bristol City even though we lost 9-2 in 1996 so its always a pleasure seeing the mighty Saints run out at a professionally run club with big stands and much bigger crowds than we are used to. We will take your advice re the drinking holes on Saturday night. I hope Cleethorpes has enough lager for me and spirits for Mrs Stalbanandy? We love a drink but only in relaxed friendly atmospheres with no bottomhole kids around

Andy, the High Street and Market Place are mega busy hives on a weekend night and i think Gypsy Tears, which is bang in the middle of the row of pubs on the High Street, has live bands on but not sure if it's usually the Friday or the Saturday as i'm usually well on my way by then! Obvs, like anywhere, around midnight the place is packed, and you get the usual scrapping, pi$$ed up Rocky Balboas staggering around and there are as many kebab/pizza places as there are pubs. The Market Place has plenty of decent bars. Start off in the corner next to Ladbrokes and you have Sugar Sugar, Bar Babylon, The Fiddler, The Studio. Then cross the road for Teddy and Hype plus KFC etc. The best fish and chips in the land, Steels, is also on this side of the Market Place on the corner with Ernie Becketts opposite. You can see the Pier from here so take a venture towards it and turn left on the prom for arcades and a pub down the bottom called the Punchbowl/Laceys. Go the opposite way down the prom for the gardens, leisure centre, boating lake, bowling etc and towards Thorpe Park and Pleasure Island which is our version of Alton Towers but thats a bit of a trek so save that for the brisk Sunday morning hangover cure! Anyways, back to the Market Place. Parallel with this, behind everything aforementioned, is the High Street so take a side street up there and from Barclays Bank on the corner you have Scratching Post, Bootlegger, Wetherspoons, Gypsy Tears, The Bobbin, Harveys, Baracuda, Smugglers and O Neils. If you want to dodge some of the younger generation and out for a good bogie then hit the Swashy after 11 and the DJ just sticks to 70s, 80s & 90s and everyone loves it after a few! In the daytime there's St Peters Ave which is behind Ladbrokes and is the main shopping street. This also houses the Ocean fish bar which others have mentioned earlier and can be found straight away if you venture to your right from the Dovedale doorstep whereas left will take you to the seaside. Thats about it really mate. Stay in Clee until you goto the game, any bus on the high street will take you to BP for around £1 and a 5 min journey, or take a walk down Issacs Hill and along Grimsby Road for more chippys, 10-15 min walk, quick livener or a brew in the away bar, bring a scarf or shirt to stick on the ceiling and youre there pal! Most people are surprised when they come here as it is a cracking place. We even had Boycey off Only Fools and Horse here a few weeks ago tweeting he couldnt believe how good the pubs etc were! I went to Torquay for our game last season and considering its the English riviera it wasnt half as good as it is here! Enjoy the game lads. I'm pretty confident we will see the fixture through quite comfortably despite our poor 2nd half showing on the box last night. UTM

Enjoy Cleethorpes while you can because there won't be much of it left after the City Army descend on it. The hordes of ravenous middle aged vegan's, half-crazed on Prosecco and complimentary shortbread biscuits from the Premier Inn will rampage through the town buying souvenirs and riding peaceably on buses !
Reading this thread you would think we were anticipating a Saga holiday not a death or glory FA Cup tie.
The real City fans won't be travelling in coaches or staying in hotels, oh no, we are coming by sea in boats with dragon head prows and throwing axes.

'Real' city fans St Michael?? I've probably seen more games over the last 40 years than you have had hot dinners. Are 'Real' city fans like the ones who threw flares last weekend and could have got us expelled from the competition if they had hit a Weston player? Never mind, I will enjoy my Saga weekend away and will quite happily have a beer or two with the very friendly mature Grimsby folk after the game
