This Friday (26th July) The Saints play League One's Leyton Orient in their first pre-season fixture.
It is most likely to be used by Castle as a trial match for the many lads trying out for the Saints (Around 38) But we could see some familiar faces return, the likes of, Frater, Bastock, Fisher etc.....
But with another friendly the next day, it's likely to be a very mixed team.
Kick off is 7:45pm at Clarence Park.

As you say Saint, it is probably going to be a mixed squad and we can expect the usual array of trialists. I must confess though, I'm just looking forward to getting back to watching some live football. It will also be interesting to see who Castle and his staff are looking at in terms of new players. Hopefully there will be a few gems in there to get us excited about the new season.

Just looking at the latest news on the Leyton Orient website.
It seems that they are likely to send a big squad to this match and to play a different team in each half.
In their recent friendly against Cray Wanderers, the manager, Russell Slade, fielded a 4-3-3 formation with the following personnel in the first-half - Jamie Jones; Elliot Omozusi, Ben Chorley, Aaron Brown, Mike Cestor; Adam Chambers, Matthew Spring, Craig Dobson; Dean Cox, Scott McGleish, George Porter.
In the second-half, they switched to - Butcher; Harry Beautyman, Teerell Forbes, Josh Millwood, Kenny Gillet; Stephen Dawson, Jimmy Smith, Rob Eagle; Ryan Jarvis, Alex Revell, Dan Charge.
The full-time score was: Cray Wanderers 0 - 2 Leyton Orient (Chorley pen '41, Revell '84)

Apparently Dean Cox will sit out tonight's match as he is suffering from illness. He will be joined on the sidelines by defender Aaron Brown, who took a knock on his knee in Wednesday's 2-0 win at Cray Wanderers. This is the preview from the Leyton Orient website - www.leytonorient.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10439~2093790,00.html

I actually know George Porter, I met him off another football forum before he signed for Leyton Orient.

We're hoping to have updates put on this thread, for those who can't make the match tonight.

Right, we're under way at the Park, and the Orient line up is as follows:
Jones; Omozusi, Forbes, Chorley, Gillet; Jarvis, Spring, Chambers, Dawson; McGleish, Revell
Subs: Butcher, Smith, Eagle Beautyman, Argent, Millwood, Cestor, Patulea, Porter
It should be noted that Russell Slade, the Orient manager, plans on using his starting XI for an hour, before making changes.
The City line up will follow shortly.

GOAL ORIENT 8mins
Not a great start for the Saints as Alex Revell scores to put Leyton Orient a goal up.
From the Saints point of view, it was a poor goal, as the number 10 was given too much time by a rusty looking SACFC backline.

After some technical difficulties we have the Saints line up: 1) Michael Emery 2) James Fisher 3) Peter Smith 4) Shane Hill 5) Adam Everitt 6) Ryan Frater 7) Mark Peters 8) Danny Johnson 9) Drew Roberts 10) Inih Effiong 11) Jack Bailey

The Saints are playing 3-5-2, with Smith and Fisher as wing backs. Shane Hill and Danny Johnson in midfield, with Drew Roberts behind the strikers, in what is virtually 3-4-1-2.
It'll be interesting to have a look at our new front line, although it must be said that, in the times I have seen him play, Effiong hasn't exactly looked like a twenty goal a season striker. I would love to be surprised tonight.

While there's an apparent lull in the influx of info coming from the Park, now is a good time to give credit to my source at Fortress Clarence - Daedalus.

Some information off the top of my head about some of the Leyton Orient players gracing the turf at Clarence Park tonight:
Elliot Omozusi - either a former Fulham youngster or a current Fulham youngster on loan at Orient, either way he is a centre back who can play on the right side of defence too.
Jake Argent - we all know him from his two spells with the Saints last season, a young, pacey striker
Ryan Jarvis - formerly of Norwich and/or Luton? Someone may correct me on that
Matthew Spring - certainly formerly of Luton! And Watford - a central midfielder

Danny Johnson has picked up a knock, and has therefore had to make way for Rob Magwood.

A glimmer of hope for the Saints as Drew Roberts has the ball in the net, but it is ruled out for offside.
Whether the decision was the right one, we'll never know, but it's great to see last season's top scorer back in the yellow and blue of City, and with the ball in the net, whether offside or not!

GOAL ORIENT 37mins
Perhaps disaster and calamity are words too strong for a pre-season friendly, but it seems they are relevant tonight, as Scott McGleish doubles Orient's lead.
Michael Emery was put under pressure by the Orient attack, and he made a hash of it by passing straight to a player in red.

GOAL ORIENT 42mins
It's that man McGleish again as he puts us three down. Hitting the post with his initial effort, he turned in the rebound - only three minutes to go to half time, and it can't come quickly enough.

GOAL ORIENT 44mins
Taking advantage of Michael Emery's advanced position, Scott McGleish spectacularly lobs the ball over him, completing a seven minute hat trick for the 36 year-old front man.

Few can argue with my source when he says 'depressing stuff.' I'm just hoping the boys haven't heard the phrase 'start as you mean to go on.'
Sounds like some poor goals have been conceded and the heads went down at 0-2. Now, I'm grabbing a cuppa ... and some pills.

We're back under way at the Park, and it's now basically St Albans City vs St Albans City, as Lee Butcher and Jake Argent enter the fray, while Saints players and fans alike will be relieved to see the back of three-goal man McGleish.
The Saints have made five changes, and we're hoping that we'll be able to bring those to you imminently. Here's hoping I'll be able to bring out the blue font at full-time to rival that ghastly red in the post above!!

Plenty of changes for Orient just past the hour, but not much else to mention except Jake Argent being denied by a last-ditch challenge 18 yards out moments ago.

No news is apparently good news, as the Saints are doing well to hold firm in this second half. Sounds like a much more assured and composed performance, although there are little Saints attacks to report.

GOAL TO ORIENT
And there it is - a fifth goal, as Matthew Spring scores from twenty-five yards, although there is a hint of a deflection about that one. We mustn't forget that this our first friendly, against a league side, and that we can't read much into this. Come on City, let's grab a goal.

CITY 0-5 ORIENT Revell 8', McGleish 37' 42' 44', Spring 81'
Comfortable in the end for Leyton Orient, who complete their second pre-season victory of the year. That was just a work-out for the Saints, and we can hope for a better performance tomorrow afternoon, although it would have been nice to have been able to pull out the blue font!!

Didn't expect to win it.... Shooting fish in a barrel springs to mind!
But I actually thought we put in a good performance considering the strength of the O's (they were a bit good weren't they! Who was the their rocket propelled guy on the wing?). Hope no-one was badly injured, it was supposed to be a 'friendly'. Bazza would have been handy esp second goal. (Experience counts).
We actually strung some passes together (when allowed!) so I'm quietly confident.
There was nothing on telly last night so didn't miss anything for it.

What was quite interesting was to see how the Saints lined up: -------------------------Emery -----------Frater --------Peters ---------Everitt Fisher ---------------------------------------------Smith -------------------Hill ----------Johnson -------------------------Roberts ------------------Effiong --------Bailey That was the starting XI in what was basically a 3-4-1-2 formation. No images allowed -http://www.football-lineups.com/pics/tactic3-4-1-2.jpg I quite like the idea of us playing this system with the quality we have in defence and the fact that with Peter Smith in particular, we really have a proper wingback who can do everything (get forward and offer an attacking threat as well as defend). Last night Peter Smith played slightly more advanced and was given a bit more freedom to get forward than Fisher, with Everitt slotting in to cover him. I also liked the idea of Drew Roberts playing behind the front two because he is the sort of player who I think would thrive in that kind of role. It's naturally a bit worrying at the moment that we don't have better options up front though.

It is worth noting that Leyton Orient are also ahead of us in their preparations, this being their second game of pre-season. They looked sharper but also passed the ball better and were much better organised as you'd expected from a League One side. The Saints will be disappointed with the goals they conceded though, a few of which were quite soft really and down to mistakes. However, Castle said that he wasn't going to be judging players too much in these games and that it was more about fitness and gaining match sharpness, so we definitely shouldn't look too much into it.

Well, it wasn't the best night for watching the Saints, but what do you expect when playing a team much higher than us? Anyway, on-wards and up-wards with today's match against Watford, a larger crowd and a better match, I feel we have a bit more of a chance this afternoon.
