This Monday St Albans set off on the three hundred mile round trip to Somerset to face an inform Weston-super-Mare team who will be encouraged by their positive start to the season to date.
The Seagulls impressive total of ten points so far is a vast improvement on last season when they had only one point to show from their opening six fixtures. This good start is a continuation of the form shown at the end of the last campaign when they finished with fourteen points from the last seven matches to climb out of trouble.
Weston are the bookmakers perennial favourites for relegation but surprisingly are the longest standing team in the division, although they have been reprieved on three occasions, (2007, 2008 and 2010) after finishing in the relegation zone.
One player the Saints defence will have to keep close tabs on is Shawn McCoulsky currently on loan from Bristol City, the young striker having found the net on five occasions already this season.
The Saints are in a good run of form away from Clarence Park having lost only once in the last eight outings including four victories, the one reversal coming at the hands of Bath City earlier this month.
Saturdays excellent victory over Whitehawk saw Ian Allinsons team climb into third place in the league table, heady days indeed after last seasons long relegation battle. The Seagulls sit three points behind in eighth place.
Allinson reported that the squad had “no significant injuries” after the Whitehawk game and although the starting eleven seems settled it will be interesting to see if he decides to ‘freshen up’ the team for the second game of the Bank Holiday weekend. Sam Merson will be hoping to grab his first start in a City shirt after a fine substitute appearance which he capped with an outstanding goal.
City announced on Sunday the signing of vastly experienced David Noble recently of Exeter City, who is expected to bring craft and stability to the midfield, an area where City have been a little lacking so far this season since the departure of Sam Corcoran.
