A member of the Stalbansnostalgia Yahoo forum (which I am a member also) did these films by standing exactly where the original photographer stood and somehow morphed the old photo with a present day one. Hope you like them. There may by more to come.

Cheers boomer. I think there is a past and present picture of Clarence Park in there. Can't remember which film though.

Andy Lawrence, the person who created the films, has explained how it was done.
There are many old photos of thye streets of St Albans and he has copies. He drew diagonal lines on the photos to find the middle and found where the original photographher stood. For the Holywell Hill, Chequer Street and St Peter's Street ones he had to stand in the middle of the road to find the spot at 5am when there is very little traffic. (Try doing that during working hours). And took his present day photo. Apparently he has special software called Photomorph which changes the photo. Then he added the soundtrack. Too technical for me!!. I hope he does some more. Andy also contributes to the Herts Memories website,

Do you know when the older photos are from, Brummie? They look very early 20th Century to me... although I could be wrong.

I would hazard a guess some of the latest photo's are from 1920? Some of the photo's you can guess the age, e.g one of the pioctures of Hatfield road shows soldiers marching, so I would palce a guess that was taken sometime during World War 1, which was when the friend's battalions were very big. (1914-1918)

Sorry COYS. Don't know the ages of the photos cos they were not mine, but at a rough guess I would say 1900 to 1920.

groups.yahoo.com/group/stalbansnostalgia/messagesJust in case anybody wanted to join the Nostalgia group where the two youtube films came from. The link is above. The group was formed iin 2007 as a sort of protest against the Nostalgia Page in the St Albans Observer being dropped.

Just been told by Lindsay, the founder, that the group was formed in rememberance of local character "Ginger" Mills who sadly died around that time. Ginger Mills was a legend. Here are a couple of photos. The first is with his van in Gentle's Yard, St. Albans with Verulam Road shops in the background taken in 1975. The second was taken in Pershore, Worcester (where he moved to after St. Albans), just before he passed away in Feb 2008. I read somewhere the Ginger Mills got up on stage at the Isle of Wight Festival in about 1970 when (I think) Eric Clapton was on. I remember seeing him strut around the town. He looked a proper character.

I remember him as well, reading about his disillusion with the way St Albans had become probably strikes a chord with many of us that have been born and bred here

Certainly remember Ginger from the late 60s early 70s, before I left town. A true character and a nice bloke.
The video clips are excellent - really appreciate the link to them.
Isn't technology wonderful? Now, where did I put that Betamax tape....

I think that the one with the soldiers marching through town was the Bedford Reg. in 1916. My Grandfather was one of them, He however was a cook and was travelling in the back of a horse and cart. So my Grandmother told me!!. Whatever, it is very well done congrats to Andy Lawrence.
