POPULAR matchday voice Tony Watts has agreed to return to the club as public address announcer. Tony, who has a morning show from 10am–1pm on local radio station Hemel Sound, will return to the PA box beginning with the Queen’s Park Rangers home friendly on Monday July 18th. Tony took time out last season but when approached by the new regime at the club, kindly agreed to bring back his entertaining mix of info and music. “It was nice to be asked and it will be good to come back,” said Tony. “I did miss matchdays and now the time is right to return.” If you have any personal celebrations or notable events you would like your friends and family to hear, send your dedications to be read out at the next home game or one in the future by clicking the following link and filling out the fields. Click here to email Tannoy Tony Link for requests: www.sacfc.co.uk/index.php/component/contact/12-contacts/6-tannoy-requests.html

Thanks, fellas, I very much appreciate your comments.
Ian Ridley will do a fantastic job at Clarence Park and the content going out on air on match days will need to impress the new fans that Ian's efforts will bring in. I expect match day presentation to be fast moving and up-beat and be regarded as the best in the league.
I was also impressed by the comments of a friend of mine, who incidentally is a lapsed supporter of some three years. This friend has contact with Lawrence Levy on a professional level and told me some while ago that Mr Levy is as straight as the proverbial die and has no hidden agenda as regards the football club.
This mate is doing something he has not done before - he is intending to come to some pre-season matches so let's hope that his response to the new regime is typical.
Over the next week, I intend to produce what are called "sweepers". These are much like jingles but are spoken and not set to music. They generally have a sound effect either in the background or at the end. Sweepers are normally played to link records together or to end an announcement and take the broadcast back to music.
My software is programmable so that sweepers (or station I.D's) can be played between every record, every second, third, fourth record etc.
So a sweeper will generally consist of a phrase of say up to 12 syllables. For example "St Albans City - just like watching Brazil" followed by a sound effect (say a whoosh). I make that 11 syllables. "The Saints - moving on up" followed by a rocket sound effect or a door slamming is 6 syllables. "This is fortress Clarence Park " is 7 syllables.
So if you have a suggestion for a sweeper, please post it on here. We would not like every sweeper to include "St Albans City" as they would become boring.
And "Ridley bites yer legs" is a no-no.
I look forward to meeting up with you all again.
A new day - and a new era.

Saint said "David Howells' Yellow Army".
I am waiting to hear from him regarding his preferred nickname to use in a sweeper.
This suggestion is on our list but it is generally sung rather than spoken so does present a bit of a problem.
It's a shame Paul Bastock is no longer with the club. "Bazza Bites Yer Legs". "We've got Paul Bastock".

That's a nice one, Yellowfox and I'll put it into production.
As I'm not paying people to do voice overs, there's no guarantee that the voice used will turn out to be satisfactory for a particular job. For example, two sweepers were finished yesterday, complete with sound effects, but only one will be used.
Your idea may be suitable for a female voice and I know a presenter on another station who may be prepared to utter these few words for free.
If it turns out OK, we'll use it. I'll keep you informed.
I have about 7 sweepers in the mill at present.

Mick the MikeYou could have a big brusky mans voice saying "Oh The Saints" then the crowd replies "Go Marching In". This would really get the crowd going at CP. Thanks BushTheSaint.

Bit of an 'exclusive' for Saints Chat! Mick the Mike has kindly sent a preview of one of the sweepers he mentioned in his post above. I've attached it to this post so that people can download it for a sneak preview. Also, it might give an idea of what a good sweeper is like so we can suggest some more ideas to Mick. Sounds as if Mick the Mike has a number of good sweepers recorded. Looking forward to hearing them at the ground! Thanks to MtM for the 'exclusive'. Attachments:

Yellowfox suggested:
Clarence Park - home of family football
as a sweeper.
A friend of mine who is a DJ with Heart, has done about 20 VO's for this, some slow, others quicker.
They have worked well and her voice, which has a deal of warmth in it, will prove to be a good choice, I feel.
However, the sweeper will not be available for Monday as the guy who produces them, putting in all the whooshes, echos, bells and whistles, is away in Cornwall at present. Hopefully something will be available for Sunday week.
Right now, we have enough sweepers but I may develop some more later in the season, centered around players if and when any of them get "adopted" by supporters.
Bazza would have been good!
Anyway, thanks for your interest Yellowfox. If I had known your identity, I would have emailed you with a MP3 of some of the VO's. But there we go.

How about music after we score a goal, when I did the PA once during the 05/06 season I bunged on 'Unbelievable' by EMF everytime we scored, reaction from the crowd was divided but apparently the players loved it

Music after a goal is generally seen as something which clubs with no atmosphere do, hopefully, this season, as the fans coem back, there will be an atmosphere and no need for music after goals!

Is it? I'm not sure about that. Personally, I don't have a problem with it. I think it is also important that we explore all avenues and test the water.

Yep, its one of those pet hates for many football fans I think, I'd rather no music and let the crowd create some noise after a goal than just having music being played.

I can't stand goal music. Just my opinion, of course, but I cringe when I hear it from other clubs. I've never been a fan of it. Just something unnatural and forced about it.
Personally, I'd much prefer to hear the natural reactions of the crowd when a goal is scored.
It's only my opinion though. Perhaps if it was the right piece of music, it could work, I guess. Most clubs seem to pick awful stuff to play when a goal is scored though!

I agree with D. I dislike goal music and think it sounds false and unnatural.
Most managers don't like it but I remember Ritchie Hanlon wanting it. He, Eamsie and I sat around for ages suggesting ideas, playing them and then rejecting them one by one.
One day, Mark Beard came in and said that when he was at Sheff. Utd. they had a good goal tune there. I got in touch with them and they sent me an MP3 down.
I've still got it on the computer and will send an MP3 of it over to D. who can do clever things to let you hear it, no doubt. You'll know it when you hear it, of course.
Anyway, I recall (something quite difficult for me these days!) that the then boss of the Supporter's Club and I did a quick poll among supporters and the overriding view, by a large majority, was that it wasn't wanted.
From an announcers viewpoint, it is a nightmare, because the tune has to be played immediately the goal is scored. At that vital time, the announcer also has to deal with the stop watch to announce goal time and in most cases has to ask the press guys for the identity of the goalscorer (because the announcer has been looking on the computer screen for updates at other matches for announcement at half time). Sometimes the press haven't got a clue, especially after a goalmouth melee, which means that the announcer has to go down to the dugout to get the manager's view.
So the last thing an announcer would want, would be cueing up goal tunes on the computer. Too many other things to do in say 10 seconds.

I think the player who is celebrating the goal is sometimes a givaway, Supporters just want a little bit of music b4 the game the information of following games and any other information that is do with our club and the players who are playing that day, Not sure we need all this other voice overs at our level of football.

I have to disagree with you chaps.
Regardless of the 'level' of football we play at, I think it's great to aspire to something professional and innovative like this. I think Mick the Mike has the potential to add a bit of colour to match days and what's wrong with that?
I think with the right mix of music, and ideas like these sweepers, people (especially young people) will visit Clarence Park to find that it is a vibrant and exciting place full of energy and enthusiasm.

Dont like the idea of music during the game..It could end up like the I.P.L. with scantily dressed girls dancing and showing lots of legs and...and,er,er,um.....Not such a bad idea now I think more of it?
