THE FINAL WORD - written by Saint (Jake Ellacott)How did the Saints get on against Cambridge City? The Saints fell to a heavy and rather sobering 4-0 defeat away at Cambridge City on Tuesday evening. Cambridge City are seen by many as one of the favourites for the league this coming season and so we all knew this was going to be a tough game. The manner of the defeat, however, will have given City a real wake up call and will have reminded them of how tough the Southern League will be, especially with a new side coming together for the first time this season. The scoreline could have been much worse for the Saints if it wasn't for some wasteful finishing from the Lilywhites. Cambridge were 3-0 up by half-time. The second half, at least, saw a better performance from the Saints, but they never looked like scoring and Cambridge City ended up as comfortable 4-0 winners. What did David Howell have to say about it?David Howell gave a calm and deep analysis of the 4-0 defeat at Cambridge City on Tuesday night in his post-match interview. The manager said that he was very disappointed and that his players had failed to followed instructions Howell felt that the players picked the wrong options, made poor decisions, and suggested that if it wasn't for Cambridge's profligacy, the Saints could have lost by more. He summed it up as a cruel lesson, concluding that the team need to learn from our mistakes. You can listen to his post-match interview on the SACFC.co.uk website by clicking this link - Howell Looks for Team to Bounce Back. How did Barwell Town do in their last game? The Kirkby Roaders came out 3-1 winners at home against Banbury on Tuesday. A brace from Luke Barlone, along with a solitary strike from Jamie Towers saw Barwell overcome an early Banbury goal and help them to their first win of the season. Finally:Will the Saints bounce back from Tuesday evening's defeat? Or will Barwell cause more misery for City? Get involved in the pre- and post-match discussion in the thread below. COYS! The City Archives - Coventry City, Pre Season Friendly 1995-96
We have a new feature to place alongside our previews this season, as one of Saints Chat's regular posters, Brummie, delves into the history books to provide us with match reports from the past. This gives a chance to walk down memory lane, or learn a little about City's past, before the next match in the present!
This week, as we have never played Barwell before, Brummie has given us a typed copy of a match report from pre-season friendly in 1995 against Coventry (as one of the nearest places to Barwell).
Thanks, as always, go to Brummie for providing the report! For the next time, we'll have a past report from our many meetings with Hitchin Town!

A long time ago (40 years!!) I actually played against Barwell when they were in the Leicestershire Senior League. I was only 16 / 17 at the time and just making my way into senior football with Leicester City. My memory is that they were a very big physical side at that time drawing on a lot of players from the surrounding mining communities. I think I still have one or two bruises to show for my troubles This will have obviously changed now, but I would still think this is going to be a tough fixture if our approach is slightly off.

It wasn't pretty, but at least it was three points. Nice to see forwards that put it about, but the quality of some of the controlling, passing and clearances was dire. Fortunately, Barwell weren't much better and missed several good chances, especially towards the end. A great party atmosphere in the village with the carnival but it didn't find its way to the football ground.

If truth be told we were lucky to win that game, if it wasnt for the woeful finishing from Barwells attack we certainly would have been going home with a point / nothing! We were unlucky not to go into the half in the lead, two good saves prevented Howarth opening the scoring.
Sol Shields scored a scrappy goal but a goal is a goal and we created a couple of chances after that.
Cant complain though a wins a win and onto Tuesday!

This was the tough game that most Saints fans probably expected or should have done. A lot of teams will go to Barwell this season and come away pointless. Looking at last season, Barwell lost just 2 games at home out of 31 played. northamptonsaint is right, it certainly wasn't pretty but it was a battling performance by the Saints and we just about deserved the three points. I didn't think Sol's goal was scrappy; the build up with their keeper spilling the ball may have been but Sol's finish from about 10 yards out was clinical and gave their keeper no chance. I thought Rob Haworth and David Ijaha were outstanding. Looking forward to another set of Canaries on Tuesday night. COYS

I think there were a few of us behind the goal!
My first look at the new Saints on Saturday. Agree with most that we were fortunate to win but overall I was reasonably impressed with the performance. Rob Haworth was my MOM, but was also impressed with Sol Shields and David Ijaha. Plenty to be hopeful about for the future!
