Whilst researching the 1901 and 1911 census I found some interesting things about the earliest St Albans City footballers. Such as where in St Albans that they lived?. Here are a few examples. These are from the first couple of seasons or so

In the above list Ivan Sharpe, who was born in St Peters Street which later became Samuel's the jewellers, went on to play for England Amateurs in the 1912 Olympic games. He was an amateur player, whose "day job" was a journalist. He also played for Watford, Leeds City (forerunner to Leeds United) and Huddersfield Town. After retring he wrote books on football and contributed to many football programmes until he died in 1967.

Habbijam, who scored St albans City first ever goal in the friendly against Clove featured as one of my archive reports, apparently hailed from Watford. He actually lived in a house very close to the old Watford Orient football pitch in Callowland. He only played a few games for us in our first season before returning to play for clubs in the Watford area.

I thought Watford were formed from some other club. I can't remember their name now. Perhaps one of their many plastic fans on here could fill us in?

Not sure I count as a 'plastic' Watford fan! I watched them first in 1972 about 9 years before I discovered the Mighty Saints! Watford FC were formed through the merger of West Herts FC and Watford St.Marys in 1891? I think Watford Orient played in the Spartan League at one time (1920's?).

Thanks Euclid.
PS: By plastic, I mean those that walk round St Albans with their brand new Hornets shirts on, unaware that St Albans City exists.

The surname of Miskin was associated with the original 1881 club. On the census the family lived at Romeland Hill as they would do for many years to come. When the original club was based at Bernards Heath they played friendly matches on land owned by the Miskin family and one or two members of that family also played in the team.

Just browsed the 1881 census for the more uncommon surnames associated with the original club. I came up with these details
Christopher Miskin, Romeland Hill, builder William Masters Rosslyn Villa Alma Road, Tile Merchant Alfred Webdale, Fishpool Street, Straw Hat merchant's son 18 years * Henry Charles Webdale, Fishpool Street, Straw hat merchant's son 25 years * Thomas Brash, 4 Hazelwood Terrace, Teacher 35 years Herbert Slade, Tudor House Alma Road, Straw hat manufacturer Harold Aylen, Sheephouse Farm, Farmer's son 18 years Robert Balderson, Corner Hall, Hemel Hempstead, Wine merchant Charles Cumberland, Alma Road, Scholar 18 years Thomas Eling, 118 Chapel Street Luton, Sewing machine engineer Robert Thody, Lattimore Road, carpenter.
* The Webdales were at different addresses in Fishpool Street suggesting they were cousins.
