This afternoon's game was progressing nicely with Chesham 1-0 up at half time through a James Potton goal from the edge of the area when, early in the second half, the game exploded in unprecedented fashion which will almost certainly become national news (Some publicity for the Club at last !!).
The events were roughly as follows :
Chesham's young centre half Rob Bartley was flattened in the penalty area by (I think) the Redditch no. 9. Penalty ! we all shouted - and the referee agreed. Rob needed medical attention and while he received it the ref. called the Redditch player to him for what we expected to be at least a yellow card. Suddenly (and I was 60 yards away, so am an unreliable witbness), the Redditch player seemed to strike the referee in the face. The Ref must have been shocked and hurt as he fell to the ground. Mayhem breaks out as several players drag the Redditch man away - he then leaves the field to loud boos from the crowd. The Ref, back on his feet waits a couple of minutes with the two linesman and then gives three blasts on his whistle, signalling the apparent end of the match. PA announcements first say the match is 'abandoned' then amended to just 'suspended' - but then we hear that, sadly, the match is definitely over.
Everyone stands around, agreeing no-one has ever seen anything like this before in a lifetime of watching football etc. etc. Then further drama - Quite rightly, the police are called to arrest someone, presumably for assault (and possibly criminal damage to a dressing room ?). He is driven away, not cuffed, in a police van, smiling broadly - he presumably thought it was funny !
What happens now ? Well, no doubt a lifetime ban will be involved, but I hope Redditch, who looked a neat side, will have to forfeit the match and the 3 points because Chesham were a goal up with a penalty pending - and were not involved in the man's crazy action. Will Chesham supporters have to pay if the match is re-played ? Will Redditch start with ten men or eleven ? Should they just play the remaining 30 minutes with the score at 1-0 and start the match with a Chesham penalty ? All will be revealed later - but this is a very sad day for football.
This all spoilt what had been a free-flowing game, being played in a good spirit, on a golden autumn afternnon, watched by a healthy crowd of around 320.
Who knows - but by tomorrow evening Chesham United should become very famous !!
