The most important positions we need to look at now must surely be a quality central defender c/w a leader out on the pitch.

Well l agree Boomer. Mind you, l've just been looking again at the Squad that finished last Season, and taking into account the loan Players that have returned to their Clubs, the Players that have moved on, and the Players we've brought in, then thats actually 16 we've got so far, if we've still got Sam Russell and Harold Joseph for next Season, l don't know about those two. 14 if we haven't.

Looks like another season treading water with the current squad.

Joseph is indeed still with the club, while Russell will probably still be an emergency number two.

Possibly my favourite signing of the summer. Looks very good on the ball and adds creativity.

Where is the commanding centre half who can organise the defence, and where is the leader we need on the pitch.?
These could be the same player of course, but I do not have faith in Noble as the on-field leader, despite his obvious quality on the ball.
Who was the trialist Central defender who now has a hamstrung injury ?

Understand Tom Bradbury who was trialling with us as a CB ended up getting a deal with a club in the SPL.

Well, any lack of defenders apart, it seems to be just what it is at the moment, apart from Layne Eadie and Tom Gardiner, basically the same as last Season. Squad numbers suggest that another couple of Players could come in still, so perhaps another Central defender might come in. That said, looking at who we have got on board, well, you just have to hope that the Players have learned from last Season and l know we got caught out time after time after time with poor goals conceded from set plays, but lA knows that and Glen is Quoted as saying he wants to work on us defensibly, so you also have to trust Ian and Glen to improve us defensibly. If they can, let's see what we can do, as the new Players that we have signed up, sound exciting and promising, alongside the bulk of last Seasons Squad, so let's see what we can do. COYS!

And yes, before you say it ... I am forever the optimist. Well, no use being otherwise, or else as a Supporter there is no point in turning up to support the Players, and if you're a Player, no point in turning up to play football matches otherwise, soòoo .... lol

Dave Diedhiou has been tried out in defence a couple of times during pre-season (a position he also covered at Hendon) so we could see him come in as a mobile and commanding/vocal centre half.

I am forever the pessimist. I hope I am proved wrong but our central defence and defensive midfield as it stands currently is not going to be strong enough to keep us in the top half of this league. I am surprised that this has not been addressed as a priority by the management of the club, since it was such an obvious weakness last season.
Perhaps IA/GA are waiting to see who might become available as the pre-season ends, or perhaps they have someone waiting in the wings ?
We will score goals, and our forwards do look useful, but it's no good, obviously, if the defence is shipping goals at the other end.

Having shipped 6 yesterday- most of them avoidable- I'm pessimistic too. Can only get better defensively, although Dean, Ben and Tom looked good. Percy too. Who was no.12 - scored our second? Why did Luton's subs get announced and not ours?

David Moyo scored our second and third

Couple of bad mistakes by Dean, still need a big strong commanding CB not talk already of a CM who can play there ffs.
Liked the look of the new signings though, 12 was Moyo he got the second and third goals Ralston the first.

Spoke to IA after the game. He'd love a big commanding CB but they currently get better offers elsewhere

i am not surprised that good CB's are in demand. This is because they are an absolute priority at this level, probably at every level, just look at the poor defending our national team produced in the World Cup when it mattered ( Kyle Walker ! )
The first signing of the summer should have been an experienced CB who has played at Conference National level or League 2, even if they are costly. Now we have to hope we can pick up someone no one else wants !

Or a loanee perhaps. I thought Moyo and Gabriel looked pretty good but haven't we our usual surplus of attackers? Defence looked better in the second half.

Spoke to IA after the game. He'd love a big commanding CB but they currently get better offers elsewhere That's the trouble these days, even at our level. Players know that they can get more money elsewhere ..... oh and silly me, l nearly forgot, how could l !! so do the Players agents know that they can get more elsewhere ! At the end of it all when the start of a Football Season is a week away or something and any Players still haven't got Clubs, thats when it's a case of "pick the bones out of that lot" or failing that, a couple of loans come in

Every single player signed and in the squad for this season didn't get a better offer elsewhere... Or if they did, they still chose to sign rather than go with the better offer. It's just they are midfield or attackers rather than CBs.
I'd love to sign a CB but they just keep getting better offers elsewhere sounds like a bit of a token response to me (which is fair enough, we aren't naming trialists so he's hardly going to tell general supporters about his transfer movements, but in Ian we trust and I'm sure he has his reasons and has things in hand 🤞🏻

Agree with that Ahad. We should trust IA and remember where we were before he arrived. Someone else said the team will tread water this year.... I don't think IA would be happy with that. Hopefully the new coach can gel whichever defenders we have into a cohesive and effective unit....

NOOOOO. "We should trustIA and remember where we were etc etc" How long does that card keep you out of jail.. just incase any one forgets...look where we were two seasons running!! Any wayAppy regardless of what IA says that position is a critical one for us and needs sorting as a priority and its not just a "wish list" item ..is he saying that in the last 7months hes been looking( I hope hes been looking) but cant bring anyone in as they get better offers? Really?

I knew you'd say that Davy! Wenger lasted a while on past achievements.... I think IA still has some credit but another season ending like the last one might spend it all!

Well, without stating the obvious and of course its already been discussed in different threads on here, our defence is by and large the same one as last Season, so unless a commanding CB comes in that can improve us, we go again with basically last Seasons defence with just a couple of changes. Ian would have improved the Central Defence if he could have l am sure, but we do indeed have to trust Ian and Glen in so much as they will be working with the Players to try to eradicate last Seasons defensive errors such as at set plays, you'd like to think the Players will be wanting to improve themselves defensively as well. They went through it too and they'll know only too well that they have got to improve on last seasons defending as well. Its a new Season, another new beginning and it is what it is. The main thing is, come what may, we hit the ground running on Aug 4th and we all get behind the lads, COYS !

To be honest the centre backs are tall enough to win headers of set plays but it purely seems we don't have a strategy to defend them

We hit the ground sprinting last year and look what happened! It's December onward we need to worry about, and this year we'll be looking the other way...
