Their last match was a Red Insure Cup game on Tuesday night away to Abingdon United, which they won 1-0. Last Saturday, they won their FA Cup 4th Round Qualifying tie against Weston-super-Mare. They managed a 3-2 win away from home to progress in the cup. Their last match in the league was a 1-0 defeat away to Weymouth, which brought to an end a five match winning streak in the league.

We have a new feature to place alongside our previews this season, as one of Saints Chat's regular posters, Brummie, delves into the history books to provide us with match reports from the past. This gives a chance to walk down memory lane, or learn a little about City's past, before the next match in the present!

This time, Brummie has given us a typed report of a match that took place in 1998. Over to Brummie for the report!

ST ALBANS CITY v OXFORD CITY

March 24th 1998

City finally killed off any threat of relegation with a devastating destruction of rock-bottom Oxford City on Tuesday night.

Boss Garry Hill targeted nine points for safety when he took over two weeks ago and a brace from Rob Haworth and goals from Jon Daly and Justin Gentle handed St Albans their 10th point under their new supremo.

The victory was City’s first sat Clarence park in exactly one month and carried them away from the dreaded drop zone and into the dizzy heights of 10th spot, their highest position in over four months of football.

“To be honest. I never looked at the relegation situation when I took the job. It was obvious we had enough quality at the club to be in a stronger position and the players have responded by showing it” said Hill.

“Once again we created plenty of chances and once we went ahead it was a question of how many. Now we must start looking forward to next season because there is still plenty of work to be done in the final weeks”.

Hard work has been the basis of Hill’s initial revolution and another high octane display put paid to Oxford’s hopes of stretching their unbeaten run against City to four games, since winning promotion to the Premier Division.

It took St Albans just 70 seconds to threaten and although Rob Haworth’s bullet header flew narrowly over City were clearly in the mood for goals.

Steve Clark and Jon Daly were both denied by reflex saves from keeper Moores and the same pair then wasted left-foot chances before Hill’s heroes finally made the breakthrough.

It was Daly who got the all important opening strike seven minutes before the break, finishing calmly after Gary Cobb had burst past two challenges in the box.

That was Cobb’s last contribution before limping off with a calf problem, although with new boy Matt Jones stepping ably into midfield, City continued where they left off after the break.

The second half was just nine minutes old when Haworth chased down a through ball nudged past the keeper and beat Clark to the tap in, while success was sealed with two goals in the space of three minutes.

It was Haworth who claimed the third after applying the deftest of touches to Tom Meredith’s free-kick. Another set piece saw Justin Gentle add the fourth on 67 minutes as his short corner flew straight over Moores and into the net.

Oxford did salvage some pride with Lee‘s curling consolation effort on 75 minutes, although with Haworth hitting a post and Gentle and Jones coming close to a fifth late on, City ended the night on a high.

The difference between that team being in relagation and pulling out of it was Garry Hill. No disrespect to the Late Jimmy Neighbour, but most of those players played for him and did nothing!

It was a good team though and Hill got them playing.

It remains to be seen what the current team will do and if Owsy will get them doing it!

This Saturday's game is a tough one to call. Oxford are going well but may have their minds on the cup.

A bit of a 'nothing' game so far by all accounts. Sound like same old, same old to me. Oxford hit the post as well before they took the lead. I have to say I do find the team selection very perplexing to say the least, but what do I know? Gray is James Gray, ex-Arlesey and coach to the MWY team.

I must say that Jupp hasn't been looking the fittest....changes have been made to all the outfield players but not the keeper and we're still playing poorly and losing-maybe the answer is there?!?!

I would say the weakness is pretty much everywhere except the keeper. I think both Jupp and Viner have done ok but there is a limit what they can do when everything is crumbling in front of you. Notwithstanding the fact that a number of players are just not good enough for this level and the manager needs to act on it, the main problem, I feel is lack of leadership on the pitch. Also if the manager is talking about lack of concentration in the latter stages, then, to me, that is showing a lack of fitness.

Viner hasn't had a chance at showing himself at a league game yet has he? He's done so well for the reserves keeping 4 clean sheets in a row i think, is very commanding and has a great kick on him-which set up the only goal scored in the cup against broxbourne tuesday night. With all the changes you think he'd be given a chance at a couple games. Doesn't seem like it would do us any harm!!
